Abstract: The present invention provides water-based energy curable compositions that are useful as primers on metallized substrates. The compositions comprise energy-curable monomers and oligomers, inert polyurethane dispersions, and phosphoric acid. The compositions exhibit improved adhesion to metallized substrates, compared to compositions that do not contain phosphoric acid. In addition, the compositions provide improved adhesion to overprinted energy-curable inks when the compositions of the invention are used as primers on metallized substrates.

Abstract: A paint applicator, kit and methodology for using the same is disclosed. For example, paint applicator that allows a user to load a desired amount of paint, such as a water based other low VOC paint, into the paint applicator and an advancement mechanism that dispenses paint at a rate controllable by the user is disclosed. The advancement mechanism can include system that translates a rotational force applied to an end cap of the applicator into a linear that advances a piston which in turn applies paint to an applicator portion. The paint may be reusable or may include a ratchet system that allows for only one time use. methodology and kit can incorporate a syringe for loading paint into the paint applicator, reducing the loss of paint through spilling.

Abstract: A coating composition includes a first polymer and a second polymer that are incompatible and non-reactive with one another. The absolute value of the difference between the refractive index of the first polymer and the refractive index of the second polymer is about 0 to about 0.01. The first polymer and the second polymer are soluble in a carrier liquid that is a good solvent for the first polymer and a poor solvent for the second polymer. The carrier liquid is removed from the coating layer to spinodally decompose the mixture of the first polymer and the second polymer in an amount sufficient to form a substantially continuous first phase with a predominant amount of the first polymer and a substantially discontinuous second phase with a predominant amount the second polymer. At least 70% of the second phase includes droplets with an aspect ratio, when viewed in the plane of the surface of the substrate, of less than about 3.

Abstract: A method for forming an antislip material. A flexible thermoplastic carrier is provided. A hot release surface is provided. Provided is a first layer of discrete thermoplastic particles, sifting on the hot release surface. The discrete particles are above their softening temperatures, providing in the first layer a tackiness. The method includes contacting the carrier with the tacky first layer for sticking the first layer to the carrier, and thereafter removing the carrier, and therewith the tacky first layer stuck to the carrier, from the release surface. Thereby the carrier is provided with a hot, preferably discontinuous and/or elastomeric antislip coating. With a heat energy of the hot coating a bond is formed between the carrier and the coating. The removing of the carrier includes pulling the carrier out of the contact with a pulling-out force. The temperature of the hot release surface is above the melting temperature of the carrier. The carrier would be spoiled, if heated completely to the temperature of the release surface and simultaneously pulled with the pulling-out force. Therefore the contacting time is kept shorter than a minimum time required by a heat of the hot release surface for spoiling the carrier. Flat-topped roughening projections can be included in the antislip coating.
