Abstract: Color calibration of color image rendering devices, such as large color displays, which operate by either projection or emission of images, utilize internal color measurement instrument or external color measurement modules locatable on a wall or speaker. A dual use camera is provided for a portable or laptop computer, or a cellular phone, handset, personal digital assistant or other handheld device with a digital camera, in which one of the camera or a display is movable with respect to the other to enable the camera in a first mode to capture images of the display for enabling calibration of the display, and in a second mode for capturing image other than of the display. The displays may represent rendering devices for enabling virtual proofing in a network, or may be part of stand-alone systems and apparatuses for color calibration. Improved calibration is also provided for sensing and correcting for non-uniformities of rendering devices, such as color displays, printer, presses, or other color image rendering device.

Abstract: The invention provides a system and method that allows for the calibration of color and intensity in a display system in a manner that is practical for the user, and handling obscuring factors, giving the user the ability to make intelligent trade-offs, and making it possible to quickly and efficiently re-compute a correction. More generally, correction and adjustment of intensity and color non-uniformities, and using optical sensor feedback to detect and correct for those changes is contemplated. This includes, but is not limited to, showing very bright images and very dark images. This invention further provides methods for making a practical system for the user, including a method of calculating corrections, dealing with obscuring factors that can affect the calculation process, providing information to allow users to make decisions on how to make trade-offs on the quality factors of the display, and allowing fast re-calculation of intensity corrections when re-calibrating.

Abstract: In an example, a method of calibrating a white point of a display may include receiving a plurality of color values, and one or more measured color values corresponding to one or more colors displayed by a first target display. The method may include generating, based on the plurality of color values and the one or more measured color values, a second-order or higher response-surface regression model that maps color values corresponding to a second color space to color values corresponding to a first color space. The method may include generating predicted color values for a specified white point by inputting a plurality of specified color values corresponding to the specified white point into the second-order or higher response-surface regression model, where each predicted color value may correspond to the first color space and each of the specified color values may correspond to the second color space.
