Abstract: Method for preparing a catalytic fabric filter comprising the steps of a) providing a fabric filter substrate, preferably consisting of glass fibers, having a gas inlet surface and a gas outlet surface, the gas inlet surface is coated with a polymeric membrane, preferably consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene; b) providing an aqueous impregnation liquid comprising one or more catalyst metal precursor compounds; c) impregnating the fabric filter substrate with the impregnation liquid; and d) drying and thermally activating the impregnated fabric filter substrate at a temperature below 300° C. to convert the one or more metal compounds of the catalyst precursor to their catalytically active form, wherein the drying of the impregnated fabric filter substrate in step d) is performed from the gas outlet surface.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for preparing a metallized open-cell foam or fibrous substrate, wherein the method comprises: (A) providing an open-cell foam or fibrous substrate, wherein the open-cell foam or fibrous substrate contains a polymer comprising heteroatom-containing moieties within the bulk of the open-cell foam or fibrous substrate or as a coating on the open-cell foam or fibrous substrate, wherein the polymer comprising heteroatom-containing moieties is selected from polyvinylpyridine, polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyvinyl alcohol, polyallylamine, polyethylene oxide, polyethylene imine, polyethylene sulfide and copolymers or blends thereof; (B) contacting the open-cell foam or fibrous substrate with nanoparticles of a first metal to provide a nanoparticle coated open-cell foam or fibrous substrate; and (C) contacting the nanoparticle coated open-cell foam or fibrous substrate with a solution comprising a salt of a second metal and a reducing agent to provide the metallized open-cell foam or fibrous substrate having a layer of the second metal on the nanoparticle coated open-cell foam or fibrous substrate.

Abstract: A method of fabricating composite filaments is provided. An initial composite filament including a core and a cladding (such as a Pt-group metal) is cut into smaller pieces (or is first mechanically reduced and then cut into smaller pieces). The smaller pieces of the filaments are inserted into a metal matrix, and the entire structure is then further reduced mechanically in a series of reduction steps. The process can be repeated until the desired cross sectional dimension of the filaments is achieved. The matrix can then be chemically removed to isolate the final composite filaments with the cladding thickness down to the nanometer range. The process allows the organization and integration of filaments of different sizes, compositions, and functionalities into arrays suitable for various applications. Materials and components made from such composite filaments and arrays of composite filaments are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method for producing a fatty acid ester through desulfurization of sulfur from a fatty acid ester using a catalyst, wherein the catalyst carries a catalyst metal on a support, (a) the catalyst contains as the catalyst metal one or more elements selected from the elements of group 9, group 10 and group 11 of the periodic table, (b) the total pore volume of the catalyst is 0.05 mL/g or more, and (c) the volume of pores with a pore size of 0.1 μm or more and 500 μm or less is 50% or more of the total pore volume of the catalyst. A desulfurization method using the desulfurization and a method for producing an alcohol through hydrogenation of the fatty acid ester obtained through the desulfurization are also provided.

Abstract: Methods for improving heat transfer at the interface between the internal reactor wall and mesh media containing microfibrous entrapped catalysts (MFECs) and/or microfibrous entrapped sorbents (MFESs) are described herein. Improved (e.g., more rapid) heat transfer can be achieved using a variety of approaches including increasing the contacting area of the interface between the mesh media and the reactor wall so that more contacting points are formed, enhancing the contacting efficiency at the contacting points between the mesh media and the reactor wall, increasing the number of contact points between the mesh media and the reactor wall using fine fibers, and combinations thereof.
