When a running web (3) is coated with a liquid coating mixture, at least one side of the web is provided with a coating (40, 40′) of coating mixture. Existing excess (33) of coating mixture in or adjacent to the regions of the edge portions of the web is removed by being blown off downstreams of where the coating operation is performed.

Apparatus and methods for applying a first material to a moving second material that has at least two edges. The apparatus may include at least one supporter for supporting the second material in a substantially non-horizontal orientation and at least one applicator for applying the first material to the second material adjacent to one edge of the second material such that the first material substantially migrates across the second material towards the other edge thereof as the second material moves in a predetermined direction. The apparatus may include apparatus for dispersing the first material on the second material such that the first material that remains on the second material is substantially uniformly distributed thereon. The apparatus may also include interchangeable reservoirs for containing the first material.

An apparatus to dispense a droplet of liquid, such as solder flux, onto the surface of a substrate, such as a printed circuit board, and thereafter flatten the droplet with a burst of pressurized air directed onto the droplet. A dispenser has a dispenser body, which has a liquid supply passageway adapted to connect to a source of liquid. A nozzle body connects to the dispenser body and includes a liquid discharge passageway in fluid communication with the liquid supply passageway. The nozzle body also has an air discharge orifice which is adapted to connect to a source of pressurized air for selectively discharging bursts of pressurized air. The air discharge orifice is configured and aligned with the liquid discharge passageway so that the discharged bursts of pressurized air impinge upon one of the droplets of liquid dispensed from the liquid discharge passageway so as to flatten that droplet and thereby increase the contact area between the droplet and the substrate.

In a dip coating apparatus including a jig having a function of generating a stream of air flowing downward toward the surface of a coating liquid stored in a bath, and causing the jig to hold a base to be coated and dip it in the coating liquid, the bath includes a lid having an opening whose inside diameter is equal to or greater than the inside diameter of the opening of the bath. The apparatus is capable of forming a uniform film free from roughness on the surface of a desired base, e.g., a photoconductive element for electrophotography.

There is claimed a method for depositing fluid material from a linear nozzle in a substantially uniform manner across and along a surface. The method includes directing gaseous medium through said nozzle to provide a gaseous stream at the nozzle exit that entrains fluid material supplied to the nozzle, said gaseous stream being provided with a velocity profile across the nozzle width that compensates for the gaseous medium's tendency to assume an axisymmetric configuration after leaving the nozzle and before reaching the surface. There is also claimed a nozzle divided into respective side-by-side zones, or preferably chambers, through which a gaseous stream can be delivered in various velocity profiles across the width of said nozzle to compensate for the tendency of this gaseous medium to assume an axisymmetric configuration.

Devices and methods for applying a polymeric coating to a medical device. The steps of the coating process including applying a liquid polymeric material to the surface of the medical device, then directing a stream of gas to impinge on the surface of the medical device. Excess liquid polymeric material is removed from the surface of the medical device. The devices used in the coating process and the coated medical device are also part of this invention.

A fluid knife for use with a workpiece treatment/cleaning apparatus, the fluid knife including a front blade and a bottom blade cooperating to form a nozzle. The front blade is pivotally mounted whereby pivoting the blade increases the size of the nozzle to purge the nozzle of any particulate matter caught or trapped in the nozzle.

A method of application of a liquid or pasty medium onto a moving material web consisting, in particular, of paper or cardboard, in which a direct application (2) of a liquid or pasty medium (4) onto one side of a moving material web (1) and a contactless deflection (3) of the moving material web along a curved path of motion ensues, the side of the moving material web to be provided with the liquid or pasty medium passing through a concave curvature and the direct application (2) of the liquid or pasty medium ensuing directly ahead of the deflection (3) or during the deflection as a free jet along a contactlessly guided section of the moving material web. Additionally, an apparatus for implementing the method is described.

A device is disclosed for applying adhesive to platens of a textile screen printing machine as the platens move from the unload stage to the load stage. The device comprises a frame mountable to the screen printing machine so that it extends over the moving platens, at least one interconnectable housing carried by the frame. Each housing has an array of adhesive-depositing nozzles and adhesive-spreading air nozzles plus a drying nozzle. As a platen passes under the housings, a sensor initiates the array of adhesive nozzles to deposit columns of adhesive onto the platens. Then the air nozzles spread the columns of adhesive by blowing air onto the columns. Finally, the spread adhesive is dried by gas from the drying nozzle, preferably directing a single curtain of air under pressure onto the adhesive. The housings are modular so that the device can be used with larger platens by simply adding one or more housings.

An air knife device for regulating the thickness of a layer deposited on a strip at the output of a bath, comprising at least one nozzle defined by two lips spaced a small distance apart, the nozzle being supplied with pressurized fluid in order to blow at least one flat jet of fluid onto the strip. The device is associated with at least one fluid cushion stabilizer arranged on at least one side of the nozzle along one of its lips and comprising a substantially flat wall extending from this lip in a direction substantially parallel to the strip so as to define a thin, flat space between the wall and the strip. A fluid is introduced into this space for the formation of a fluid cushion which is able to stabilize the vibrations of the strip.
