Abstract: An optical system for generating broadband light via light-sustained plasma formation includes a chamber, an illumination source, a set of focusing optics, and a set of collection optics. The chamber is configured to contain a buffer material in a first phase and a plasma-forming material in a second phase. The illumination source generates continuous-wave pump illumination. The set of focusing optics focuses the continuous-wave pump illumination through the buffer material to an interface between the buffer material and the plasma-forming material in order to generate a plasma by excitation of at least the plasma-forming material. The set of collection optics receives broadband radiation emanated from the plasma.

Abstract: A purification apparatus includes a radio frequency (RF) signal source that generates an RF signal, first and second electrodes, and a conduit. The first electrode receives the RF signal and converts it into electromagnetic energy that is radiated by the first electrode. The conduit includes input and output ports and a chamber. The input and output ports are in fluid communication with the chamber, and the chamber is configured to receive an electrodeless bulb. The chamber is defined by first and second boundaries that are separated by a distance that is less than the wavelength of the RF signal so that the chamber is sub-resonant. The first electrode is physically positioned at the first boundary, and the second electrode is physically positioned at the second boundary. The first and second electrodes and the chamber form a structure that capacitively couples the electromagnetic energy into an electrodeless bulb within the chamber.

Abstract: The present disclosure describes a plasma illumination device with microwave pumping, comprising: a hermetically sealed casing, a magnetron, a microwave resonator containing a rotatable electrodeless plasma lamp, a coaxial coupling line running parallel to the casing axis, for transmitting microwave power from the magnetron to the microwave resonator, at least one heat sink located on the inner walls of the casing and providing heat transfer through the casing to the external environment, and a light-transmitting hermetically sealed hollow cylinder fitted in a hermetically sealed way on the casing above the microwave resonator. This results in an illumination device with microwave pumping, which may be used to illuminate objects located in unfavorable environmental conditions, particularly those in which there is a high content of dust or other contaminants, or in an aqueous environment at great depths.

Abstract: Electrodeless high intensity discharge lamps have the promise of higher reliability and higher efficiency than traditional electroded high intensity discharge lamps. However most electrodeless HIDs operate in the frequency range of around 400 MHz to 2.5 GHz resulting in expensive, inefficient RF drivers that reduce the overall efficacy of the lamp. Operating the lamp at lower frequencies results in substantial increase in the size of the resonators used in traditional electrodeless HIDs. In this invention a novel design is used to lower the operating frequency of the resonator without increasing the size of the resonator. This provides an avenue to increase the conversion efficiency of the RF driver and the efficacy of the lamp system.
