Abstract: An echelle spectrometer includes a slit opening for incoming light, a collimator which collimates a diverging beam of light generated through the slit, a reflective echelle grating which disperses the collimated light along a first dimension; a cross-disperser which disperses at least a portion of the collimated light in a second dimension orthogonal to the first dimension to create a two-dimensional spectral field-of-view; and an imaging system which images the two- dimensional spectral field-of-view onto a detector; wherein the imaging system comprises primary, secondary, and tertiary tilted mirrors, where each of the tilted mirrors comprises a freeform, rotationally non-symmetric surface shape.

Abstract: Non-linear methods for quantitative elemental analysis and mineral classification using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy are disclosed. According to one embodiment, a method, comprises calculating concentrations of elements in a sample using a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) instrument. The LIBS instrument implements a kernel partial-least-squares regression (KPLSR) analysis. The method further comprises displaying the concentrations of the elements according to the KPLSR analysis.

Abstract: A subject identification device includes: an illuminator configured to generate illumination light including components at a plurality of wavelength bands, each of the components having a characteristic in accordance with a respective one of settings; an imager configured to generate an image signal by capturing light from a subject under the illumination light having the illumination characteristic; and a processor including hardware. The processor is configured to: define an illumination characteristic of the illumination light; analyze the image signal to acquire spectral information of the subject; and cross check the spectral information of the subject with subject identification information in order to identify the subject. When the subject is not identified, the processor is configured to define another illumination characteristic that causes spectral information of potentials for the subject to be identified, and subsequently each of the imager and the processor performs a process.

Abstract: A 2-D sensor array includes a semiconductor substrate and a plurality of pixels disposed on the semiconductor substrate. Each pixel includes a coupling region and a junction region, and a slab waveguide structure disposed on the semiconductor substrate and extending from the coupling region to the region. The slab waveguide includes a confinement layer disposed between a first cladding layer and a second cladding layer. The first cladding and the second cladding each have a refractive index that is lower than a refractive index of the confinement layer. Each pixel also includes a coupling structure disposed in the coupling region and within the slab waveguide. The coupling structure includes two materials having different indices of refraction arranged as a grating defined by a grating period. The junction region comprises a p-n junction in communication with electrical contacts for biasing and collection of carriers resulting from absorption of incident radiation.

Abstract: In swept source Raman (SSR) spectroscopy, a swept laser beam illuminates a sample, which inelastically scatters some of the incident light. This inelastically scattered light is shifted in wavelength by an amount called the Raman shift. The Raman-shifted light can be measured with a fixed spectrally selective filter and a detector. The Raman spectrum can be obtained by sweeping the wavelength of the excitation source and, therefore, the Raman shift. The resolution of the Raman spectrum is determined by the filter bandwidth and the frequency resolution of the swept source. An SSR spectrometer can be smaller, more sensitive, and less expensive than a conventional Raman spectrometer because it uses a tunable laser and a fixed filter instead of free-space propagation for spectral separation. Its sensitivity depends on the size of the collection optics. And it can use a nonlinearly swept laser beam thanks to a wavemeter that measures the beam's absolute wavelength during Raman spectrum acquisition.

Abstract: A multispectral imaging apparatus includes a processor and a plurality of sets of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in communication with the processor. One or more first sets of LEDs has a wavelength in a visible range, and one or more second sets of LEDs has a wavelength in a short wavelength infrared range. The apparatus includes a truncated source cone through which light from the plurality of sets of LEDs is directed onto a surface and through which light reflected off of the surface is received. The apparatus also includes a visible light camera configured to capture a first image of the surface based on reflected light that originates from the one or more first sets of LEDS. The apparatus further includes an infrared light camera and configured to capture a second image of the surface based on reflected light that originates from the one or more second sets of LEDs.
