Abstract:
Phosphorodithioate substituted carboxylic anhydride or acid derivates and their corresponding metal salts have been found to be effective multifunctional additives for various lubricants and fuels.
Abstract:
A fuel composition for internal combustion engines, and more particularly, a fuel composition for internal combustion engines containing less than about 0.5 gram of lead per gallon of fuel is described. The fuel provides acceptable valve seat protection in engines designed to operate on leaded or unleaded fuels. Ordinarily, leaded fuels contain components to reduce deposits within the engine cylinders which unleaded fuels do not. As leaded fuels become unavailable, some refiners will add valve protecting components to the unleaded fuels to satisfy the leaded market. Such fuels will then potentially cause an increase in the octane requirement. This invention deals with polybasic carboxylate additives having valve seat protection properties which avoid or minimize the octane requirement increase.
Abstract:
The invention herein is concerned with new compositions of matter made by (1) reacting phosphorus pentasulfide with an amide and (2) reacting this product with a metal-containing compound, and lubricant compositions containing same. The compositions reduce friction to a greater extent than lubricants containing no additive and, when placed in lubricating oils and used in an internal combustion engine, fuel consumption is reduced.
Abstract:
Thixotropic magnesium-containing complexes are prepared by heating a mixture of magnesium hydroxide, magnesium oxide, hydrated magnesium oxide or a magnesium alkoxide; a sulfonic acid, a pentavalent phosphorus acid, a mixture thereof with a carboxylic acid, or an ester or salt of any of these; water (optional under certain conditions); and an organic solubilizing agent (which may be liquid or solid at ambient temperature) for the acid or ester. The amount of magnesium is such as to provide a basic composition. The resulting complexes may be obtained in liquid or solid form, and are useful as additives for lubricants and fuels and as protective coating compositions for metal surfaces (such as automotive undercoats and frame coatings).

Abstract:
Phosphorothionyl disulphides are prepared by reacting an organic thiophosphoric acid with hydrogen peroxide under conditions such that either the thiophosphoric acid is added to the hydrogen peroxide or the thiophosphoric acid and hydrogen peroxide are introduced into the reaction vessel such that there is never more than 10 mole % excess of thiophosphoric acid (compared with the hydrogen peroxide) added to the reaction vessel. In this manner phosphorothionyl disulphides which are useful as ashless lubricating oil antioxidants and anti-wear additives, can be prepared in good yield and with very low acid number.
Abstract:
PHOSPHOROTHIONYL DISULPHIDES USEFUL AS ASHLESS LUBRICATING OIL ADDITIVES (ANTIOXIDANT, ANTI-WEAR AND EXTREME PRESSURE ADDITIVES) ARE PREPARED BY REACTING A THIOPHOSPHORIC ACID WITH AN ORGANIC COMPOUND CONTAINING THE GROUP >S=O (E.G. A SULPHOXIDE) PREFERABLY AT A TEMPERATURE LOWER THAN 140*C.
