    Abstract: Fluorescence chromophores such as phenylene diamine derivatives can undergo oxidative coupling and polymerization to form optical, colorimetric and fluorogenic, multimers and polymers. The presence of carbonyl containing moieties such as aldehydes and ketones under favorable environmental conditions can initiate, catalyze, accelerate and modulate this reaction which in turn provides a mechanism for the detection and quantitation of such moieties. Selected phenylene diamine derivatives can be used for the detection and quantitation of aldehyde and ketones via measurement of the reaction and the associated spectroscopic transformation. In particular, the use of meta-phenylene diamine (mPDA) and related compounds for aldehyde detection and quantitation is described. The method provides a convenient means for monitoring aldehyde and ketone levels without use of separation steps. The method is applicable to kinetic and quasi-endpoint detection assay formats.

    Abstract: In a gas phase analyte testing method a laser beam is generated using a laser beam from a laser gain medium located within an external laser cavity. A gain parameter of the laser gain medium is changed so that the laser gain medium emits across a range of wavelengths in response to the change. The beam is passed through a test sample as the gain parameter is changed, the test sample being positioned inside the external laser cavity. A change in the spatial or spectral mode distribution or dynamics of the laser emission spectrum is detected. It is then determined whether the change in the spatial or spectral mode distribution or dynamics of the laser emission spectrum is caused by the test sample.

    Abstract: An adjustable cabinet includes a machine and a transparent top board. The machine has a case and a light module, wherein the case is provided with a sample table and a slot; the light module emits light to the sample table of the case. The top board has a first side and a second side at opposite sides thereof, wherein the top board has a main portion and a first insert portion connected to an end of the main portion, and the first insert portion is detachably inserted into the slot of the case. With either the first or the second side facing the sample table, the angle formed between the main portion and the sample table is different. Whereby, the cabinet is more compatible for researchers of different body types, and the top board can be avoided from being scraped.

    Abstract: A system for collecting gas samples emitted from skin and detecting concentrations of specified components therein. The system includes a collection chamber housing defining an interior space, the collection chamber housing having a gas inlet, a gas outlet, and an opening. The opening is configured for enclosing a skin portion from which to receive an emitted gas sample and sealing the interior space against the skin portion. An inert gas source is connected to the gas inlet, which is capable of allowing inert gas from the inert gas source to flow into the interior space. A gas cell is connected to the gas outlet, which is capable of allowing the inert gas and the gas sample to flow from the interior space into the gas cell. As a laser travels through the gas cell, power and optoacoustic signals are measured and used to determine a concentration of the specified component.
