Abstract: Methods and systems for measuring the temperature of a sample can include the use of one or more illumination sources and a sample containing thermochromic material. One or more detectors are operable to detect two or more signals indicative of a component of an illumination facilitated by the illumination source(s) and scattered at two or more angles with respect to the sample containing the thermochromic material, wherein the signals are converted to a temperature.

Abstract: Based on evaporation of fountain solution from a rotating blanket cylinder to create an image that may be inked and printed, a digitally addressable heater array at or just below the blanket surface evaporates deposited fountain solution and forms a fountain solution latent image on the surface. The heater array has controllable heating elements (e.g., field effect transistors, thin film transistors) that provide a transient heat pattern on the surface to evaporate the fountain solution. Heat is generated by current flow in the heating elements, and power developed by the heating circuit is the product of source-drain voltage and current in the channel. Current may be supplied along data lines by an external voltage controlled by digital electronics to provide the desired heat at heating elements addressed by a specific gate line. The heater array may include a current return line that may be a 2-dimensional mesh.

Abstract: A method of operating a hyperspectral imaging device includes connecting electrodes on a liquid crystal variable retarder to a voltage source, rotating liquid crystal material in the liquid crystal variable retarder between a first orientation with a certain optical phase delay and a second orientation with a different optical phase delay, receiving a beam of light at an image sensor that has passed through the liquid crystal variable retarder, and producing an output signal from the image sensor.

Abstract: Methods and systems for disinfecting a surface, can include a light source, and a transparent window located above the light source. The light source can be integrated into an object, and an outer surface of the object can be located above the transparent window. Light from the light source can irradiate the outer surface through the transparent window and from within the object to disinfect the outer surface of the object. The light can comprise violet and ultraviolet (UV) light. A photocatalytic layer comprising a photocatalytic material may also be located above the transparent window and below the outer surface.

Abstract: A system includes an unpatterned heater configured to pre-heat a thermochromic coating disposed on a substrate to a first temperature. The thermochromic coating has a threshold temperature at which the thermochromic material undergoes a color change. The system also includes a patterned heater comprising multiple heating elements configured to heat selected pixels of the thermochromic coating to a temperature at or above the threshold temperature according to a predetermined pattern. An air gap is maintained between the multiple heating elements and the thermochromic material while the patterned heater is heating the thermochromic material. The air in the air gap heated to a second temperature.

Abstract: A device has a hyperspectral imaging sensor including a polarizing device to receive and polarize an incoming beam of light, a liquid crystal variable retarder adjacent the polarizing device to receive the polarized beam of light from the polarizing device and to change polarization of the light in a wavelength dependent manner, an output polarizer to receive the wavelength-dependent polarized light and to convert polarization state information of the light into a form detectable as light intensity, a voltage source connected to the liquid crystal device, and a controller to control voltages applied to the liquid crystal variable retarder; an image sensor synchronized with the controller to receive the light in a form detectable as light intensity as a function of retardance of the liquid crystal variable retarder and convert the light to an output signal, and a processor to transform the output signal into spectral information.

Abstract: An optical device includes a waveplate sandwiched between first and second polarizers and is arranged to receive light emanating from an object or object image that is in motion relative to the optical device. A detector array includes one or more detector elements and is optically coupled to receive light from the second polarizer. Each detector element of the detector array provides an electrical output signal that varies according to intensity of the light received from the second polarizer. The intensity of the light is a function of relative motion of the object or the object image and the optical device and contains spectral information about an object point of the object.

Abstract: Spatially modulated light emanating from an object moving along a flow path is used to determine various object characteristics including object length along the flow direction. Light emanating from at least one object moving along in a flow path along a flow direction of a spatial filter is sensed. The intensity of the sensed light is time modulated according to features of the spatial filter. A time varying electrical signal is generated which includes a plurality of pulses in response to the sensed light. Pulse widths of at least some of the pulses are measured at a fraction of a local extremum of the pulses. The length of the object along the flow direction is determined based on the measured pulse widths.

Abstract: One or more live substances is cultured at a plurality of test locations of a test vessel. The test locations include a thermochromic material and one or more test substances. A spectral shift in light emanating from the thermochromic material of the test locations is detected. The spectral shift occurs in response to an increase or decrease in energy conversion by the live substance. An effect of the one or more test substances on the live substances is determined based on the detected spectral shift.

Abstract: A nanocalorimeter device includes a substrate having test cells, each test cell comprising a sample location. Each sample location includes a reaction surface suitable for an enthalpic reaction of constituents of liquid droplets, droplet movement and configured to merge the droplets, and a layer of thermochromic material thermally coupled to the reaction surface. The thermochromic material is configured to exhibit a spectral shift in light emanating from the thermochromic material in response to a change in temperature of the merged droplets.
