Abstract:
A handheld fluorescence detector that includes a handheld data processing system and a UV light source connected to the data processing system is disclosed. The UV light source illuminates an object to be scanned with light having a UV illumination wavelength. A safety mechanism inhibits the light from the UV light source from reaching an eye of a person in the vicinity of the UV light source at an intensity that would damage the eye. A fluorescence detector senses fluorescent light generated by the object in response to the illumination. The fluorescence detection can utilize a photodetector or a human observer. The detector can be included in a cellular telephone or PDA. Safety mechanisms that utilize baffles or total internal reflection to protect the user are described. In addition, interlock mechanisms that prevent the UV light source from being activated when no object is present can be incorporated.
Abstract:
A projection optical system for digital lithography. The system includes an Offner imaging system defining an optical axis and having a well-corrected region. The system also includes spatial light modulators circumferentially arranged about the optical axis, such that optical beams emitted thereby propagate through the Offner imaging system within the well-corrected region.
Abstract:
An object to be imaged or detected is illuminated by a single broadband light source or multiple light sources emitting light at different wavelengths. The light is detected by a detector, which includes a light-detecting sensor covered by a hybrid filter. The hybrid filter includes a multi-band narrowband filter mounted over a patterned filter layer. The light strikes the narrowband filter, which passes light at or near the multiple wavelengths of interest while blocking light at all other wavelengths. The patterned filter layer alternately passes the light at one particular wavelength while blocking light at the other wavelengths of interest. This allows the sensor to determine either simultaneously or alternately the intensity of the light at the wavelengths of interest. Filters may also be mounted over the light sources to narrow the spectra of the light sources.

Abstract:
A reflective surface sub-assembly for a light-emitting device, comprising a substrate, at least one area reserved for placement of a light-emitting device assembly on the substrate, and a diffusive reflective layer applied on selected regions on the substrate, wherein if the light-emitting device assembly were placed onto the at least one area then the diffusive reflective layer would reflect photons emitted by the light-emitting device assembly is disclosed.

The refractive element may also be arranged with the solid state light emitting cells to mix the emitted light.
Abstract:
A multiple layer film and a method of manufacturing the same, the film having a phosphor bearing layer including phosphor and a carrier, and a rigid protective layer. In some embodiments a mixture including phosphor and an uncurable fluid are dispensed onto a surface, and the mixture is at least partially dried. A curable fluid is dispensed onto the at least partially dried mixture, and the curable fluid is cured.
Abstract:
A method and a system for displaying images are provided. In the method, a pixel is provided that includes a layer of ferroelectric material and a layer of liquid crystal material. A first electric field is momentarily applied to the pixel to electrically polarize the ferroelectric layer to a first polarization. The first polarization is then used to maintain the liquid crystal material in a first orientation corresponding to a first apparent brightness of the pixel.
