    Abstract: A matrix addressable flat panel display includes a flat cathode operable for emitting electrons to an anode when an electric field is produced across the surface of the flat cathode by two electrodes placed on each side of the flat cathode. The flat cathode may consist of a cermet or amorphic diamond or some other combination of a conducting material and an insulating material such as a low effective work function material. The electric field produced causes electrons to hop on the surface of the cathode at the conducting-insulating interfaces. An electric field produced between the anode and the cathode causes these electrons to bombard a phosphor layer on the anode.

    Abstract: A display tube for a light source including a translucent face glass assembly having a front surface side which is formed spherically, a peripheral portion on which a step portion is formed, inner surface side on which a phosphor layer and a metallized film are sequentially formed, and a contact segment having one end connected to the metallized film. A glass bulb is provided having one open end portion sealed to the step portion of the translucent face glass assembly with low-melting frit glass. A stem assembly is provided having a anode electrode assembly and a cathode assembly mounted therein. The anode electrode assembly and the cathode assembly are accommodated in the glass bulb. The contact segment is contacted by the anode electrode assembly, the stem assembly being hermetically sealed at the other open end portion of the glass bulb. A high voltage applied to the anode assembly accommodated in the glass bulb is applied to the metallized film through the path of the contact segment.

    Abstract: A resonant microcavity display, comprising a thin-film resonant microcavity with a phosphor active region is disclosed. The microcavity comprises: a rigid substrate; a front reflector disposed upon the rigid substrate; a phosphor active region disposed upon the front reflector; and a back reflector disposed upon the active region. The display preferentially emits light that propagates along the axis perpendicular to plane of the display, due to its quantum mechanical properties. It exhibits high external efficiency, highly controllable chromaticity, high resolution, highly directional output and highly efficient heat transfer characteristics. For these reasons it provides a suitable display element for projection screen television, high definition television, direct view television, flat panel displays, optical coupling, and other applications.

    Abstract: A display arrangement consists of a tubular envelope with fluorescent stripes running along its length, localized portions of which are illuminated by different electron guns which produce flood beams of electrons.
