Abstract:
Compositions comprising a hydrocarbonaceous middle distillate fuel and a minor wear-inhibiting amount of a combination of (i) at least one fuel-soluble aryl phosphate of the formula(RO).sub.3 POwherein each R is, independently, phenyl or an alkyl-substituted phenyl group; and (ii) at least one fuel-soluble aryl polyphosphate of the formula ##STR1## wherein each R is, independently, phenyl or an alkyl-substituted phenyl group, Ar is m-phenylene or an alkyl-substituted m-phenylene group, and n is from 1 to 4. The combination contains from 2 to 30% by weight of component (i). These compositions are made by (a) reacting about 1.9 to about 2.1 equivalents of phenol or alkyl-substituted phenol with one equivalent of phosphoryl trihalide, and (b) reacting the intermediate product formed in (a) with from about 0.9 to about 1.1 equivalents of resorcinol or alkyl-substituted resorcinol per equivalent of phosphoryl trihalide employed in (a). Alternatively, the compositions are made by (a) reacting about 0.9 to about 1.1 equivalents of resorcinol or alkyl-substituted resorcinol with one equivalent of phosphoryl trihalide, and (b) reacting the intermediate product formed in (a) with from about 1.9 to about 2.1 equivalents of phenol or alkyl-substituted phenol per equivalent of phosphoryl trihalide employed in (a).
Abstract:
The novel polymers of the present invention are prepared by reacting a heterocyclic nitrogen compound containing at least one --N(H)-- group in the ring, an aldehyde N-containing polymer adduct (e.g., an ashless nitrogen-containing dispersant or polyolefin-substituted amine) to form an oil soluble Mannich base derivative useful as dispersant, antiwear and antioxidant additive in oleaginous compositions such as lubricating oils and fuels. Preferred heterocyclic nitrogen compounds are azoles such as benzotriazoles and alkyl-substituted benzotriazoles. The polyolefin-substituted amine can comprises the reaction product of a polyamine and halogenated long chain hydrocarbons.
Abstract:
A phosphorous- and sulfur-containing additive and its use to impart anti-wear and/or antioxidant properties to oleaginous compositions such as fuels and lubricating oils, particularly power transmission compositions, such as automatic transmittion fluids, is disclosed. The additive comprises a mixture of products formed by simultaneously reacting (1) a betahydroxy thioether, such as thiobisethanol, and (2) a phosphorous-containing reactant, such as tributyl phosphite. The reaction is carried out under reduced pressure conditions (e.g., -40 KPa to -100 KPa) to limit the amount of thioether species in said additive to less than about 45 mole %.
Abstract:
The presence of a minor amount of an anti-oxidant, a metal detergent, a dispersant or mixtures thereof in a hydrocarbon liquid containing certain quaternary ammonium hydroxides has been found to be effective in improving the thermal stability of the hydroxides.
Abstract:
A residual fuel oil is improved in dispersion stability when a large amount of sludge is contained therein and comprises (1) a thermal cracking oil, (2) a diluent and (3) a dispersant selected from the group consisting of (A) an imidazoline derivative containing a hydrocarbon group having 7 to 23 carbon atoms, (B) a hydrolysis product of (A), (C) a reaction product of an aliphatic acid having 8 to 22 carbon atoms and a polyalkylenepolyamine having 4 to 6 amino groups, (D) a monoamine containing a hydrocarbon group having 8 to 22 carbon atoms, (E) a polyamine containing a hydrocarbon group having 8 to 22 carbon atoms, (F) an etheramine having a long chain hydrocarbon group, (G) a phosphate having a long chain hydrocarbon group, (H) a salt of (G), (I) a dithiophosphate and (J) a salt of (I).
Abstract:
A fuel composition for internal combustion engines, and more particularly, a fuel composition for internal combustion engines containing less than about 0.5 gram of lead per gallon of fuel is described. The fuel provides acceptable valve seat protection in engines designed to operate on leaded fuels. A further aspect of the invention is to reduce deposit formation within the cylinders.
Abstract:
Lubricants and liquid fuel composition containing a hydrogen phosphite-vicinal diol reaction product provide additional protection to metal parts in contact by reducing the amount of friction.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to new organosoluble manganese compounds.According to the invention these compounds are complex organometallic salts of organic or organometalloidic acids in which the ratio R of the number of acid equivalents to the number of manganese atoms is lower than 2. These are produced by reacting at moderately high temperatures in organic or aqueous/organic medium the organic acid with a manganous ammine complex, prepared in situ in the organic reaction medium. The compounds according to the invention are useful both as drying agents for paints and varnishes as well as combustion additives to liquid fuels.
