Abstract:
The finishing process is applied to a surface of a roller 8 constituting a cam follower unit by the barrel finishing. When a position of a highest portion out of fine roughnesses existing on the surface is assumed as an outermost surface position, an occupation ratio of a sectional area of a virtual plane in a plane direction at a portion that is positioned at a depth of 2.0 μm from the outermost surface position to an area of an overall surface of a portion that contacts the other member is set to 90% or more. With this configuration, a tough oil film can be formed between the surface of the roller 8 and the other member, and also the improvement of durability of a member such as the roller 8, or the like, which contacts the other member via a rolling contact or a sliding contact, can be achieved at a low cost.

An opposed piston engine includes a valve mechanism for regulating fluid flow through an opening formed in a cylinder of the engine. The mechanism includes a valve operatively coupled to the cylinder so as to be rotatable to a first position to seal the opening and to a second position to unseal the opening, and at least one cam surface operatively coupled to the cylinder so as to be movable with respect to the cylinder to engage the valve so as to produce rotation of the valve.

A switchable finger follower, including an inner lever and an outer lever. The outer lever is mounted for pivoting movement to the inner lever. A coupling device is located on one of the inner or outer levers and has a coupling pin arranged to move between a locking position, in which the inner and outer levers are connected together for movement in an activation direction, and an unlocked position, in which the inner lever is pivotable relative to the outer lever. A coupling projection is located on the other of the inner or outer lever. The coupling pin engages beneath a coupling surface of the projection in the locking position, and a stop surface of the projection contacts a second stop surface on the one of the inner lever or the outer lever. The second stop surface is located on a removable shim that is replaceable for lash adjustment.

A bearing can be mounted in the bearing apertures of the inner arm and the axle slots of the outer arm. The axle slots can be configured to permit lost motion movement of the bearing. A first biasing member can be disposed on the second end of the outer arm and in biasing contact with the bearing.

The plurality of operation members include a common operation member that is provided in common between end face cams opposed to each other of the cam element sections of two cylinders disposed adjacent to each other and continuous in ignition order and that engages with the respective end face cams when both the cam element sections are close to each other, and individual operation members that are individually provided for end face cams opposed to each other of the cam element sections of two cylinders disposed adjacent to each other and discontinuous in ignition order and end face cams located at opposite ends of a cylinder row and that engage with the respective end face cams.

A method for manufacturing a roller, adapted to equip a mechanical system forming a cam follower or a rocker arm. The roller is centered on a central axis and comprising: an outer cylindrical surface adapted to roll on a cam, an inner cylindrical bore adapted to receive a pin belonging to the mechanical system, and two lateral faces extending radially to the central axis. The method includes a machining step forming circular grooves that are concentric with each other on at least one of the lateral faces of the roller. The roller can be installed within a mechanical system.

An internal combustion engine includes a variable valve mechanism that takes a valve characteristic of an intake valve, and changes the valve characteristic according to an engine operating state; a turbocharger that includes a bypass passage that bypasses a turbine wheel arranged in an exhaust passage by connecting a portion of the exhaust passage that is upstream of the turbine wheel to a portion of the exhaust passage that is downstream of the turbine wheel, and a waste gate valve that adjusts a flow path area of the bypass passage; and a control apparatus configured to, when there is a request to increase the valve characteristic according to a change in the engine operating state, change the valve characteristic to an increase side with the variable valve mechanism after opening the waste gate valve to an opening amount that is larger than before the request.

A lash adjuster is configured that reduces the impact at the time when a pressure force is exerted on a pressure-receiving effector, and reliably opens a valve by the necessary amount. This lash adjuster includes, in a relatively movable manner, the pressure-receiving effector that receives the pressure force and a relay effector that performs an operation of opening an intake valve, a pressure receiving-side damper space is formed at an insertion portion thereof, and an orifice portion is formed that suppresses an outflow of oil in the pressure receiving-side damper space when the pressure-receiving effector and the relay effector move in approaching directions. An abutting portion is formed that directly transmits the pressure force of the pressure-receiving effector to the relay effector when the pressure-receiving effector and the relay effector approach each other.
