Abstract: A diffractive multifocal lens is disclosed, comprising an optical element having at least one diffractive surface, the surface profile comprising a plurality of annular concentric zones. The optical thickness of the surface profile changes monotonically with radius within each zone, while a distinct step in optical thickness at the junction between adjacent zones defines a step height. The step heights for respective zones may differ from one zone to another periodically so as to tailor diffraction order efficiencies of the optical element. In one example of a trifocal lens, step heights alternate between two values, the even-numbered step heights being lower than the odd-numbered step heights. By plotting a topographical representation of the diffraction efficiencies resulting from such a surface profile, step heights may be optimized to direct a desired level of light power into the diffraction orders corresponding to near, intermediate, and distance vision, thereby optimizing the performance of the multifocal lens.

The method includes first breaking a holographic image into a plurality of interlaced sample sets corresponding to color separation images; and independently sampling, filtering, and reconstructing all sets. The resulting demodulated images contain no fringes. Notably, range-clipped tonal rendering curves are used to choose pixel regions of the demodulated images that will replace saturated regions. Abstract: Methods for diagnosing or assisting in the diagnosis of iron-related pathologies are provided. The methods are based on the correlation of the degree of iron-specific hypercoagulability with clinical disease. One embodiment provides a method for diagnosing or assisting in diagnosing a subject having or suspected of having an iron-related pathology by analyzing a blood sample obtained from the subject to obtain viscoelastic parameters of the blood sample as the blood sample coagulates. A variation in the viscoelastic parameters of the blood sample relative to a blood sample from a healthy subject indicates the subject has or will likely develop an iron-related pathology. Subjects having an iron-related pathology have viscoelastic parameters that are indicative of enhanced coagulation and/or diminished fibrinolysis compared to the viscoelastic parameters of the blood sample from the healthy subject.

Abstract: An optical receiver includes a detector and frame synchronizer. The detector receives an optical OFDM bit stream having a plurality of frames. Each frame has an in-phase and quadrature phase component. Each component has an OFDM symbol-bearing data payload and a synchronization header. The synchronization header includes a single synchronization pulse. The frame synchronizer detects the synchronization header on each phase component. The frame synchronizer includes first and second pairs of digital comparators for each of the in-phase and quadrature phase components. The first and second pairs of digital comparators associated with each phase component establishes different and adjustable threshold windows that is symmetric about a zero amplitude of the synchronization pulse of the respective phase component. Each frame is synchronized when the synchronization pulse respectively associated therewith is detected as having an amplitude extending beyond at least one of the windows established for one of the phase components.

The filter elements are organized into groups of N filter elements, where N is greater than three. Each filter element absorbs one narrow band and transmits N−1 narrow bands. The group of N filter elements absorbs all N narrow bands.
