    Abstract: A method and system for obtaining the capabilities of a facsimile machine. In facsimile transmission systems which utilize a communication medium in which a direct connection does not exist between the transmitting facsimile machine and the receiving facsimile machine, such as the Internet, there is usually not a polling of the capabilities of the receiving facsimile machine by the transmitting facsimile machine during the process of transmitting a communication. There is a communication over the Internet, for example, by way of an Internet electronic mail message, which requests the capabilities of the receiving fax machine. A response e-mail is transmitted so that the capabilities of the receiving facsimile machine are sent to the transmitting facsimile machine. The facsimile machines involved are not necessarily connected directly to the Internet but may be connected through transfer stations. The transfer stations are connected over a network such as the Internet and the electronic mail messages are transmitted between the transfer stations.

    Abstract: An image is digitally watermarked to convey position data about the subject of the image, such as latitude, longitude and elevation of a point depicted therein. Additional information, e.g., about camera attributes, camera angle, and 3D warp-characterizing polynomial coefficients, can also be included. In another implementation, a method includes receiving data representing an image or video, and embedding the data with a digital watermark. The digital watermark includes a plural-bit payload having information to: i) identify a spatial position or area depicted in the image and designated as an origin, and ii) identify a position or direction relative to the origin.

    Abstract: An Internet facsimile apparatus as a sender makes inquiry about capability, which a destination Internet facsimile apparatus possesses, to a local server in a local network. When the local server has no capability information of the destination stored, the sender makes inquiry to a DNS server higher than the local server and obtains capability information of the destination from the DNS server. Then, the sender registers the obtained capability information of the destination to a memory, which the local server or the sender has. This realizes that the sender can surely obtain capability information of the destination. Also, this makes it possible to automatically register capability information of the destination to the memory of the local server or the sender.
