MERCAPTANS ARE PREPARED BY REACTION OLEFINS AND H2S IN THE PRESENCE OF LIQUID SATURATED ALIPHATIC KETONES. SIDE REACTIONS RESULTING IN BY-PRODUCT FORMATION ARE GREATLY REDUCED. THE MERCAPTANS CAN BE CONVERTED TO ALKYL SULFATES BY OXIDATION. THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A METHOD OF PREPARING MERCAPTANS BY COMMINGLING OLEFINS AND H2S WITH SMALL AMOUNTS OF A LIQUID KETONE AND SUBJECTING THE MIXTURE TO HIGH-ENERGY RADIATION, SUCH AS GAMMA RAYS.

Synthesis of cis 2-(1''-methyl-2''-isopropenylcyclobutyl)ethanol, a component of the boll weevil sex attractant, and intermediates therefor, in which 5-hydroxy-pent-2-ynoic acid or ethers thereof is methylated followed by cyclization to yield 3-methylpent-2eno-5-lactone which is irradiated in presence of ethylene to yield 2,3-cycloethylene-3-methylpentano-5-lactone which is cleaved and converted into 2-(1''-methyl-2''isopropenylcyclobutyl)ethanol.

The preferred compounds bleached are the epoxidized higher fatty acid esters. Hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid are examples of suitable peroxy compounds.

Increasing dosages of X-ray radiation progressively lower the color-play range of cholesteric-phase liquid-crystal materials. The effect is enhanced when an effective amount of an iodinecontaining compound is used in the liquid-crystal material. Novel iodine-containing compounds are described, and articles are disclosed that give direct reading indication of the dosage of Xray radiation that they have received, without need for a separate development operation.

UNTIL THE DESIRED DEGREE OF OPTICAL AND ULTRAVIOLET TRANSMITTANCY AS WELL AS BIOLOGICAL OXYGEN DEMAND HAVE BEEN REACHED.
