Abstract: A wet wipe is disclosed that provides both contact sanitization of a surface and application of a residual antimicrobial coating on the surface through the same wiping. The wet wipe comprises a substrate such as an absorbent nonwoven fabric and a liquid composition impregnated therein, the liquid composition comprising an organosilane such as the antimicrobial dimethyloctadecyl[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl] ammonium chloride, a non-silane quaternary disinfectant, an organic amine, and a solvent. The non-silane quaternary actives comprise a mixture of actives, and the solvent comprises 60 wt. % isopropanol or more.

Abstract: Aqueous antimicrobial coating compositions are disclosed comprising at least one organosilane homopolymer, present as a distribution of polymer chain lengths, and optionally at least one amine. A method of preparing an antimicrobial coating comprises coating a surface with the aqueous antimicrobial coating composition and allowing the composition to dry into a film that exhibits residual antimicrobial efficacy against microorganisms even after mechanical abrasion of the coating. The organosilane homopolymer may comprise only 3-aminopropylsilanetriol homopolymer, mixtures of 3-aminopropylsilanetriol homopolymer, 3-chloropropylsilanetriol homopolymer and 3-(trihydroxysilyl)propyl dimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride homopolymer, or any one of various unique organosilane homopolymers having multiple amine functionality.

Abstract: A method of quantifying an antimicrobial coatings using a handheld XRF analyzer is disclosed. The method provides an estimate of the expected level of antimicrobial efficacy for a thin film comprising silicon and/or titanium by obtaining a 14Si or 22Ti peak intensity using XRF spectroscopy and converting the obtained 14Si or 22Ti peak intensity to the expected level of efficacy using a calibration curve. A properly calibrated handheld XRF analyzer allows a user to assess the viability of antimicrobial coatings in the field, such as in a hospital where various fomites may be coated with silane and/or titanium compositions.
