Abstract:
Disclosed is a method of forming a conductive layer on an oxidecontaining ceramic substrate. The substrate is disposed in an essentially oxygen-free atmosphere and is heated to a temperature greater than 300*C. but less than the softening or deforming point of the substrate. The surface of the heated substrate is subjected to magnesium vapor, and the resultant reaction reduces the substrate surface and forms a conductive cermet layer thereon. This method can be used to form conductive layers and paths in such devices as resistors, channel amplifier arrays, multilead arrays, cathode ray tubes, and the like.
Abstract:
Apparatus for removing contaminants from the surface of a glass optical waveguide fiber and thereafter treating the fiber while preventing the surface from being recontaminated. Contaminants are removed from the surface by subjecting the waveguide to means for bombarding the surface thereof with ions having sufficient energy to remove a surface layer from the fiber. The cleaned fiber may be immediately heat treated to improve the light transmission properties thereof, or it may be coated to prevent recontamination of the surface prior to heat treatment to which the coated fiber may thereafter be subjected.
Abstract:
A method of forming an article, such as a low loss optical waveguide, by applying to a starting member a layer of glass soot to form a porous body. The porous body is then placed in a controlled environment in which a predetermined desired concentration of gases is maintained. The porous body is heated below the sintering temperature of the glass to permit entrapped gas to escape therefrom and the temperature is maintained until an equilibrium is reached between the partial pressure of the entrapped gas in the porous body and the partial pressure of the same gas in said environment. Thereafter, the porous body is further heated to at least the sintering temperature of the glass to sinter the soot particles and to form a consolidated dense member which may thereafter be formed into a desired shape while within said environment.
