    Abstract: A surface temperature measuring apparatus includes a radiation thermometer (11) that measures a surface temperature (Tm) of a measurement range larger than a measurement target region of a measurement target (100), the radiation thermometer (11) detecting, by a sensor, an infrared ray radiated from an object surface of a specified measurement range to measure a surface temperature of an object, a second temperature measuring means (11) that measures a surface temperature (Tn) of a region outside the measurement target region of the measurement target (100) but within the measurement range of the surface temperature (Tm) by the radiation thermometer (11), or a region having an identical or substantially identical temperature to a temperature of the region outside the measurement target region, and a correcting means (12) that corrects the surface temperature (Tm) that is measured using the surface temperature (Tn) that is measured into a surface temperature (T) of the measurement target (100).

    Abstract: One variation of a method for detecting a fire includes: during a first time period: detecting an increase in ambient light intensity and detecting an increase in ambient humidity; responsive to the increase in ambient light intensity and the increase in ambient humidity, detecting a fire event; during a second time period: correlating a decrease in ambient light intensity with an increase in visual obscuration; detecting an increase in ambient air temperature; in response to a magnitude of the increase in visual obscuration remaining below a high obscuration threshold and a magnitude of the increase in ambient temperature remaining below a high temperature threshold, classifying the fire as an incipient fire; and, in response to the magnitude of the increase in visual obscuration exceeding the high obscuration threshold and the magnitude of the increase in ambient temperature exceeding the high temperature threshold, classifying the fire as a developed fire.

    Abstract: A process variable transmitter for measuring a temperature in an industrial process includes an infrared detector arranged to receive infrared radiation from a component in the industrial process. A memory contains temperature characterization information which relates the infrared radiation received from the component with an internal temperature of the component. Measurement circuitry is configured to determine the internal temperature of the component based upon the received infrared radiation from the component and the temperature characterization information.
