    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve purifying effects of NOx in exhaust gas of internal combustion engine in a catalyst comprising spinel including copper, zinc, and aluminum by adding predetermined rare earth element or the like to specific copper oxide- zinc oxide-aluminum oxide spinel. SOLUTION: This catalyst, which is suitable for purifying NOx in exhaust gas produced by a Diesel engine or thin mixture engine, is composed of spinel including copper, zinc, and aluminum, in which copper oxide-zinc oxide-aluminum oxide spinel represented by the formula CuAZnBAlCO4 is used. And palladium, platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium, iridium, rhenium, a rare earth element such as lanthanum or cerium, vanadium, titanium, molybdenum, tungsten, or salts thereof or oxides thereof are added to the spinel. In the formula, A+B+C 0, B>0, C>0.
