Abstract: Amide-containing epoxy resin/amine adducts are prepared by a process in which an epoxy resin/amine adduct containing primary and/or secondary aminoalkyl groups is reacted with a carboxylic acid in the presence of esterification catalysts, particularly advantageously in the presence of an alcohol. The products prepared according to the invention are useful as binders for cathodic elsctrocoating.

Abstract: A polyadduct/polycondensate, which is water-dilutable when protonated with an acid, and which contains basic nitrogen groups, is obtained by polyaddition reaction of (A) Mannich bases obtained from monophenols and/or polyphenols, one or more secondary amines which contain one or more hydroxyalkyl groups,or a mixture of such a secondary amine with another secondary amine, and formaldehyde or a formaldehyde donor, with (B) an epoxy resin, the polyadduct/polycondensate of (A) and (B) containing groups, bonded to aromatic rings, of the formula (I) (I) with or without groups of the general formula II (II) where R1 is a polydienyl radical, R2 and R3 are hydrogen or methyl and R4 and R5 are alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or alkoxyalkyl or are linked to one another to form a 5-membered or 6-membered ring. The polyadduct/polycondensate can be used, for example, as a surface-coating binder for the cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.

Abstract: Surface-coating binders and their use. The binders are reaction products of (A) Mannich bases obtained from one or more condensed phenols, free from either groups, which contain two or more phenolic hydroxl groups per molecule, one or more butadiene or isoprene homopolymers or copolymers which contain one or more groups per molecule and have a mean molecular weight of from 500 to 6,000, one or more secondary amines which contain one or more hydroxyalkyl groups per molecule, or a mixture of such secondary amines with another secondary amine, and formaldehyde or a formaldehyde donor, with (B) one or more epoxy resins. These surface-coating binders are used especially for the cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.

Abstract: Essentially phenol-free phenol resol ethers which are bonded via o,o'-methylene ether groups are prepared by a process in which A. where the process is carried out beginning with the methylolation in an aqueous medium, the methylolation is carried out in the presence of 0.5 - 10% by weight, based on the phenol employed, of Me++ ions, the latter are then removed as a sparingly soluble salt, the water present as a solvent in the reaction mixture is removed at 30 - 80.degree.C in the presence or absence of one or more monohydric, dihydric or trihydric alcohols and an entraining agent, and the water of reaction formed during the etherification is separated off at 45 - 120.degree.C, and B. where the process is carried out beginning with the methylolation in a non-polar organic solvent, the methylolation is carried out in the presence of 0.1 - 0.3% by weight, based on the phenol employed, of Me++ ions, the etherification is effected at 95 - 120.degree.C in the presence of one or more monohydric, dihydric or trihydric alcohols, with or without recycling of the distillate which passes over, and finally residual phenol in the products prepared by A. or B. is removed by evaporation in a thin film evaporator until the phenol content is less than 1% by weight. The phenol resol ethers prepared according to the invention are useful for the preparation of coating systems and for adhesives.

Abstract: 1316332 Production of anthranilic acid and isatoic anhydride BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 5 Oct 1970 [6 Oct 1969 8 Jan 1970] 47200/70 Heading C2C Anthranilic acid and/or isatoic anhydride alkali metal salts are continuously produced by reacting alkali metal salts of phthalamic acid and/or phthalimide with a hypohalite in an aqueous medium, wherein the first reaction stage, i.e. the reaction of the starting material to form the alkali metal salt of phenyl isocyanate- 2-carboxylic acid, is effected under substantially adiabatic conditions while substantially avoiding the occurrence of back mixing and the reaction mixture formed is immediately withdrawn from the reaction zone of the first stage and supplied substantially without back mixing to the reaction zone of the following stage, i.e. the reaction to form the end product. The first stage of the reaction is suitably carried out at 10-50 C. and the second stage at 60-80 C. under atmospheric or elevated pressure, and a reducing agent, e.g. a 10-40% by wt. sodium bisulphite solution, may be added to the reaction mixture after it has left the reaction zone of the first stage and before the reaction has been completed. The alkali metal salts produced may be acidified to give the free anthranilic acid or isatoic anhydride. The starting materials may be aqueous solutions of 10-50 wt. per cent of phthalimide and/or phthalamide which contain from 1 to 1À1 mole of alkali metal hydroxide per mole of phthalimide/phthalamide, and the aqueous hypohalite solutions suitably contain 8-15% by wt. of hypohalite and 0À02 to 2À1 moles of alkali metal hydroxide per mole of phthalimic/phthalamic acid.
