Abstract: Production of alkoxylated amides of formula R1CONR2CHR3CHR4O(CHR5CHR6O)nH (I) comprises: (a) reacting a glyceride of a fatty acid of formula R1COOH (II) with an amine of formula NHR2R7(III) to give an amide of formula R1CONR2R7 (IV) and glycerol; (b) adding aqueous acid solution to the reaction mixture to pH 1-7 and separating the aqueous glycerol-containing phase from the organic phase containing amide (IV); and (c) etherifying (IV) with ethylene oxide (EO), propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide to give (I). R1 = 5-25C aliphatic residue containing 0-5 double bonds; R2 = H or 1-20C alkyl optionally interrupted by 1-5 O; R3-R6 = H; or one of R3 and R4 and/or one of R5 and R6 = Me or Et; R7 = H or CHR3CHR4OH; n = 1-100; provided that R2 and R7 are not both H. (I) are new when R2 is Me or Et. Also claimed are (1) compounds (I) obtained as above; and (2) washing, cleaning and body care agents containing 0.1-50 wt.% (I).
