Abstract: Amido-nitriles of formula (I) are new: R1-CO-NR2-A-CN (I) R1 = 1-30C alkyl, 2-30C alkenyl, 5-18C cycloalkyl, 6-18C aryl or 3-18C heteroaryl, optionally containing 1-5 substituents chosen from OH, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, amino groups, (di-)1-4C alkylamino, Cl, Br, NO2, CN, COOH,. sulpho groups, carboxy-1-4C alkyl, carboxamide, phenyl, tolyl or benzyl, or the chain may contain 1-8 non-adjacent O atoms, amino groups, 1-4C alkylamino groups or carbonyl groups, and it may also be substituted by a group of formula -CO-NR2-A-CN (i) ; R2 = H or 1-6C alkyl ; and A = 3-20C 1,3-, 1,4- or 1,5-alkylene. Also claimed is the preparation of amidocarboxylic acids or their derivatives of formula R1-CO-NR2-A-CO-R4 (IV) by partially or completely hydrolysing (I) and reacting them with alcohols, phenols or oxygen-transferring compounds during or after hydrolysis : R1 = as for (I) except that it can also contain a group of formula -CO-NR2-A-CO-R4 (ii) as a substituent ; and R4 = OH, NH2, OOH, (cyclo)alkoxy, alkenyloxy, arylalkoxy or (hetero)aryloxy, in which the organic groups may contain one or more substituents.
