The abrasive action can be controlled in a specific manner through the relative speeds of the two surfaces, the tape tension and the length of the contact surface. Abraded particles present on the layer surface are subsequently removed by extraction.

Abstract: Strip-like magnetic medium comprises a flexible support layer and a magnetic layer containing magnetic pigments in a polymer binder applied on the first side of the support layer. The magnetic layer has a thickness dM of at least 3 microns m and a specific surface porosity SFP of at least 80 cm /cm defined as the product of the specific nitrogen intake per volume element according to BET of the magnetic layer (in cm /cm ) and the layer thickness of the magnetic layer (in cm). Preferred Features: The SFP according to BET is at least 90 cm /cm . The support layer has a thickness of 15-30 microns m. The second side not supporting the magnetic layer has a roughness of 200-400 nm.

Abstract: Digital recording procedures wherein the recording support is not exposed to an obliterating magnetic field before recording are known in recent times. Such recording supports must therefore have good rewrite capability. It has been found that said requirement is fulfilled by two-layered recording supports, wherein the top layer contains a metal or metal alloy powder and has a density of less than 0.3 mu m and wherein the bottom layer contains a magnetic pigment. The coercitive force of the bottom layer has at the most two thirds the coercitive force of the top layer and the remanent magnetization of the bottom layer is at least 32 kA/m.
