Abstract: PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for encoding and decoding digital audio are provided to remarkably improve a compression ratio while maintaining the similar quality of sound. CONSTITUTION: A down-sampler(100) receives a digital audio signal for down-sampling the digital audio signal 1/n time as large as the digital audio signal. An audio encoder(200) encodes the down-sampled audio signal by using a digital audio encoding method. A spectrum modeling unit(300) receives spectrum of the input digital audio signal and the down-sampled signal for modeling a frequency band incapable of being encoded, by using a gain value in a bark band between spectrums of compressed signals. A multiplexer(400) receives spectrum compensating bit stream obtained by encoding the gain value and encoding bit stream output from the audio encoder for multiplexing the bit streams to maintain the compatibility with a digital audio encoding standard for outputting a final bit stream.
