Abstract: Continuous production of 5-alken-2-one or 3,5-alkadien-2-one derivatives (I) by reacting a 1-alken-3-ol or 1-alkyn-3-ol derivative (II) with an alkyl acetoacetate (III) in a fractionation column to form an acetoacetate and alcohol involves (i) removing the alcohol and (ii) contacting the acetoacetate with catalyst in the lower part or bottom of the column to form (I). Continuous production of unsaturated ketones of formula (I) by reacting an unsaturated alcohol of formula (II) with an alkyl acetoacetate of formula (III) in the presence of an organoaluminum catalyst is carried out by: (a) reacting (II) with (III) on the plates of a fractionation column to form the acetoacetate of (II) and an alcohol of formula R OH; (b) removing the alcohol in the overhead stream from the column; (c) contacting the acetoacetate of (II) with the catalyst in the lower part or bottom of the column to form (I) and CO2; (d) removing the CO2 in the overhead stream from the column; and (e) withdrawing (I) in the bottoms stream from the column. R = 1-4C alkyl; R = 1-37C (un)saturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl (optionally substituted by methoxy groups), 4-12C cycloalkyl or 5-30C cycloalkylalkyl; and R = 1-5C alkyl.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing 1,4-butanediol and possibly .gamma.-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofurane by oxidation of butane or benzol into a product flow containing maleic anhydride, absorption of maleic anhydride from the product flow by means of an inert, high-boiling solvent in an absorption stage, which yields a liquid absorption product, and esterification of said liquid absorption product with a C1-C5 esterification alcohol in an esterification step, yielding an esterification product containing the corresponding diester and high-boiling inert solvent. This is followed by hydrogenation of the esterification product, which results in an hydrogenation product containing the products 1,4-butanediol and optionally .gamma.-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofurane as well as the esterification alcohol. The hydrogenation product is separated by distillation into the products and the esterification alcohol and the esterification alcohol is returned to the esterification zone. Prior to hydrogenation the esterification product is separated by distillation under reduced pressured into the diester and the inert solvent, the inert solvent is returned to the absorption stage and the diester is hydrogenated in the liquid phase on a fixed-bed catalyst.

Abstract: The fixed-bed catalyst comprises palladium and selenium or tellurium or a mixture of selenium and tellurium on a silicon dioxide support and has a BET surface area of from 80 to 380 m2/g and a pore volume of from 0.6 to 0.95 cm3/g in the pore diameter range from 3 nm to 300 .mu.m, with from 80 to 95% of the pore volume being in the pore diameter range from 10 to 100 nm. It is prepared by impregnating a silicon dioxide support with a solution of a palladium compound and a selenium compound or tellurium compound or a mixture of a selenium compound and a tellurium compound, drying it and reducing it in the presence of hydrogen. The catalyst is used, in particular, for isomerizing 3-buten-1-ol compounds.
