SOLUTION: α-Ethynylcarbinol is isolated from a liquid reaction mixture obtained by adding acetylene to an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound by a continuous distillation comprising introducing a feed stream to the central part of a distillation column, azeotropically distilling away most of water together with a solvent at the top of the column and taking out α- ethynylcarbinol of the objective product at a part below the feeding part to the column.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing 1,4-butanediol, tetrahydrofuran and .gamma.-butyrolactone by oxidation of butane to a product flow containing maleic anhydride, absorption of maleic anhydride fro m the product flow with a high-boiling alcohol, which yields a liquid absorption product containing maleic acid half- and diesters and hi gh- boiling alcohol, post-esterification of the liquid absorption product and subsequent hydrogenation of the post-esterified product in the liquid phase. The high-boiling alcohol is a polyvalent alcohol with a boiling point at normal pressure of more than 233 .degree.C and the post-esterified product has an acid value of less than 30 mg KOH/g and a water content of less than 1 weight %.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing 1,4-butanediol and possibly .gamma.-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofurane by oxidation of butane or benzol into a product flow containing maleic anhydride, absorption of maleic anhydride from the product flow by means of an inert, high-boiling solvent in an absorption stage, which yields a liquid absorption product, and esterification of said liquid absorption product with a C1-C5 esterification alcohol in an esterification step, yielding an esterification product containing the corresponding diester and high-boiling inert solvent. This is followed by hydrogenation of the esterification product, which results in an hydrogenation product containing the products 1,4-butanediol and optionally .gamma.-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofurane as well as the esterification alcohol. The hydrogenation product is separated by distillation into the products and the esterification alcohol and the esterification alcohol is returned to the esterification zone. Prior to hydrogenation the esterification product i s separated by distillation under reduced pressured into the diester and the inert solvent, the inert solvent is returned to the absorption stage and the diester is hydrogenated in the liquid phase on a fixed-bed catalyst.
