Abstract: IMPROVED PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF SALCOMINE AS WELL AS THE PREPARATION OF TRIMETHYL-p-BENZOQUINONE FROM TRIMETHYLPHENOL USING THE RESULTANT SALCOMINE of the Disclosuore Improved process for the preparation of salcomine useful as an oxidation catalyst for the oxidation of alkylated phenols to the corresponding alkylated p-benzo-quinones by reacting salicylaldehyde with ethylenediamine in a mole ratio of about 2:1 and a cobalt salt in a liquid reaction medium wherein the reaction medium is a linear or cyclic carboxamide which is disubstituted on the nitrogen, in particular dimethylformamide, and the cobalt salt is cobalt carbonate or with the cobalt hydroxide carbonate, 2 CoCO3.3 Co(OH)2.H2O. Preparation of the salcomine in accordance with the invention offers significant advantages, both in the preparation of the salcomine itself and in the subsequent oxidation of the trimethylphenol to trimethyl-p-benzoquinone utilizing the salcomine.

Abstract: A process for the purification of crude terephthalic acid comprises catalytic hydrogenation using a catalyst material (I) comprising a ca bon supported hydrogenation metal whereby the carbon support comprises carbon fibers. Abstract: The apparatus for carrying out reactions in the gaseous, liquid and solid phases comprises a liquid stream-gas compressor for producing a reaction fluid, a reactor charged with metal braiding coated with catalyst, and a feed line. The apparatus for carrying out reactions in the gaseous, liquid and solid phases comprises a liquid stream-gas compressor (6) for producing a reaction fluid by dispersing a gas phase in a liquid phase; a reactor (1) having an inlet and an outlet and a reaction chamber limited by heat-deviating walls, the reactor being charged with a metal braiding coated with catalyst; and a line (7) feeding the reaction fluid from the compressor to the reactor inlet and is short so that the degree of dispersibility of the fluid does not change during the passage through the line. An Independent claim is also included for a process for carrying out reactions in the gaseous, liquid and solid phases comprising producing a reaction fluid by dispersion of a gaseous phase in a liquid phase; feeding the reaction fluid produced through the reactor; exchanging reaction heat on the walls of the reactor chamber; and separating the reaction fluid into a gas phase and a liquid phase.
