Abstract: The use of N-substituted 5,6-dihydro-4H-pyran-3-carboxamides (I) as herbicides is new. The use of dihydropyran carboxamides of formula (I) as herbicides is new. R = H or 1-3C alkyl; R1 = 1-8C alkyl; 3-8C cycloalkyl (optionally substituted by 1 or 2 1-4C alkyl on different C-atoms); 2-norbornyl; 2-(W')-3-(J)-phenyl; or 1-naphthyl, 5- or 8-quinolinyl or 5-quinoxalinyl; W' = CN, CONH2 or COOR2; J = H, 1-3C alkyl, 1-3C alkoxy or halo; R2 = 1-8C alkyl (optionally substituted by NO2 or halo); 3-8C alkenyl (optionally substituted by halo); 3-8C alkynyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or (1-4C) alkoxy-(1-4C) alkoxy; or benzyl or phenethyl, both substituted by halo or 1-4C alkoxy. An Independent claim is included for (I) as new compounds, provided that R1 is other than unsubstituted cyclohexyl. (N.B.
