Abstract: In an improved process for the preparation of 1,6-di(N -cyano- N -guanidino)hexane from alkali metal dicyanamide and a hexamethylenediammonium salt in alcoholic solution or suspension, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a limited amount of water and a catalytic amount of a base, preferably a tertiary amine and the pH of the reaction mixture is 8 to 10 at the beginning of the reaction. After the reaction is complete, water is added to the reaction mixture in the heat, above 80 DEG C, and the coarse-crystalline product formed is separated off from the liquid phase. … Preferably, sodium dicyanamide and hexamethylenediamine dihydrochloride, preferably formed in situ from aqueous 1,6-diaminohexane and aqueous hydrochloric acid, are reacted in n-butanol in the presence of 0.1 to 20% by weight of water, relative to the solvent including water, at a pH of 9-9.5. … 1,6-di(N -cyano-N -guanidino)hexane is obtained in a high yield (85-96%) and in high purity (95-97%) and with a substantially increased space-time yield.

Abstract: D,L-homocystine is produced by injecting molecular oxygen into an aqueous solution of the disodium salt of D,L-homocysteine having a concentration of between 0.8 and 1.2 moles per litre and an initial pH of between 7.0 and 8.0 in the presence of catalytic amounts of ions of a heavy metal, which can be in several valence stages, until an increase in the pH value can no longer be observed and the pH is subsequently adjusted to approximately 5.3 while stirring. Suitable heavy metal ions are particularly Fe3+ or Cu2+ ions.
