Abstract: Optical scanning of barcode symbols is carried out first in an aim mode wherein the symbol is scanned using a first scan pattern that is relatively small and dense so as to be visible to the user, and thereafter using a second, larger, more robust scan pattern for decoding. The preferred scanner module has a scanner mirror which is mounted to a bracket by way of a leaf spring, allowing the mirror to oscillate in one direction. This is hung from a stationary chassis by means of two strips of mylar film, which are themselves protected against mechanical shock by pins which pass through holes in the bracket. The pins provide accurate alignment of the bracket with respect to the chassis.

Abstract: An optical scanner such as a bar code scanner includes a segmented mirror (14), the individual sections of which have different profiles (16,18,20). By directing the scanning laser beam across the mirror, a plurality of scan lines are created, at different distances from the scanner. This provides increased flexibility by extending the scanner's working range. In alternative embodiments, a collector mirror and/or a scanning mirror may be segmented. In addition, beam shaping may be provided by reflecting the beam from one or more aplanar surfaces.

Abstract: A wrist-mounted optical scanner comprises a body portion (900) which is secured to the user's wrist by a strap (902), in the manner of a wrist watch. The body portion has a display (904), a miniature microphone (906), a photodetector (908), a transmitter unit (917) and a plurality of function keys (910). Beneath or within the body portion (900) there is stored a key pad (912) which can be slid in and out in the direction of the arrow (914) for access to the keys (916). The keys may be actuated by means of a pen or stylus (918).

Abstract: An optical scan module, for example for an optical scanner, includes an integrally molded plastics material member which defines not only the laser focusing lens, but also the laser focusing aperture and the collection mirror. In addition, the molded member may act to house and to locate both a semiconductor laser and a photodetector, thereby ensuring easy and accurate placement of those elements within the scanning assembly. The optical assembly may be in modular form, mounted onto a common printed circuit board with a beam scanner.

Abstract: An optical scanning module has orthogonally-mounted first and second circuit boards (416,418) which carry circuitry that operates together to produce the signals necessary for operation of the module, and to process electrical signals from a reflected light detector. In a preferred embodiment, scanning of the light beam is achieved by reflecting the beam from a mirror (159) which is mounted to a support (103) which itself is mounted for reciprocal oscillation on leaf springs (121,123). Oscillation is provided by the interaction of a permanent magnet (109) on the support (103), and a stationary electro-magnet (133). The invention also encompasses systems for scanning the beam simultaneously in two orthogonal directions, and for producing a moving zig-zag scanning pattern.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to systems and techniques for reading optical codes, and more particularly to code reading systems with plural imaging or scanning modules pointed in various directions toward a target volume, which increase the likelihood that a code symbol on an arbitrarily oriented object in the target volume will be read. Other aspects of the invention relate to use and configuration of hand held readers, docking devices, operator side rails, arched tunnels and mirrors for increasing the coverage of the system. Additional aspects of the invention relate to components associated with point of sale installations or code reading terminals including integrated scales, input pads, system controls and displays.
