Abstract: The disclosure relates to systems and techniques for reading optical codes, and more particularly to code reading systems with plural imaging or scanning modules pointed in various directions toward a target volume, which increase the likelihood that a code symbol on an arbitrarily oriented object in the target volume will be read. Other aspects of the invention relate to use and configuration of hand held readers, docking devices, operator side rails, arched tunnels and mirrors for increasing the coverage of the system. Additional aspects of the invention relate to components associated with point of sale installations or code reading terminals including integrated scales, input pads, system controls and displays.

Abstract: An optical scanner (30) has a scanner component mounted to a leaf spring (34) for oscillatory motion about an axis. An electromagnetic coil (58) and permanent magnet (56) cause a force to be applied to the scanner component away from a central, neutral position. Bending of the leaf spring provides a restoring force biasing the scanner component back towards the neutral position.

Abstract: An optical scanner such as a bar code scanner includes a segmented mirror (14), the individual sections of which have different profiles (16,18,20). By directing the scanning laser beam across the mirror, a plurality of scan lines are created, at different distances from the scanner. This provides increased flexibility by extending the scanner's working range. In alternative embodiments, a collector mirror and/or a scanning mirror may be segmented. In addition, beam shaping may be provided by reflecting the beam from one or more aplanar surfaces.

Abstract: A scanner determines whether a target is a bar code symbol and, if so, whether that symbol is one-dimensional or two-dimensional. For two-dimensional symbols, the scanner aligns a scanning pattern with the symbol and expands the scanning pattern to reach only to the top and bottom edges of the symbol, not beyond. The scanner also has a microprocessor-control scanning engine that uses a coil to drive a scanning element and pick up feed back signals from the scanning element. A pulse-width-modulated regulator also provides fast and efficient operation for driving the coil. The scanning engine can also be designed to generate a pattern that precesses across the target, and a powerful interface to the scanning engine allows decoding and control logic to work efficiently with and independently of the scan engine.

Abstract: METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR READING TWO-DIMENSIONAL BAR CODE SYMBOLS WITH AN ELONGATED LASER LINE A plurality of the areas of different light reflectivity of a bar code symbol, or the like, are simultaneously illuminated, using, e.g., a beam of laser light that has an elongated cross-section. The laser light beam is swept over the symbol in a direction transverse to the elongated dimension of the illuminated region so that a two-dimensional area of the symbol is illuminated over time, until the symbol is read. The light that reflects from the illuminated region of the symbol is imaged on a linear sensor array, which is then scanned or read out to produce signals representative of spatial intensity variations of the imaged light along a linear path in the field of view.

Abstract: An optical scanner module for directing a light beam to scan an optically encoded symbol includes an optical element mounted for oscillatory motion to scan the light beam in one direction by a flex element capable of torsional flexure. This oscillatory motion is induced by the interacting magnetic fields established by a permanent magnet mounted to the flex element and an electromagnetic coil driven by an AC current. bidirectional light beam scanning is achieved by mounting an assembly of the flex element, optical element and permanent magnet to one or more additional flex elements for oscillatory motion to scan the light beam in a second direction. This oscillatory motion is induced by the inclusion of an additional permanent magnet and/or electromagnetic coil.

Abstract: An optical scanning module has orthogonally-mounted first and second circuit boards (416,418) which carry circuitry that operates together to produce the signals necessary for operation of the module, and to process electrical signals from a reflected light detector. In a preferred embodiment, scanning of the light beam is achieved by reflecting the beam from a mirror (159) which is mounted to a support (103) which itself is mounted for reciprocal oscillation on leaf springs (121,123). Oscillation is provided by the interaction of a permanent magnet (109) on the support (103), and a stationary electro-magnet (133). The invention also encompasses systems for scanning the beam simultaneously in two orthogonal directions, and for producing a moving zig-zag scanning pattern.
