Abstract:
A glass has a density of 2.60 g/cm3 or lower, a Young's modulus of 88 GPa or more, a strain point of 650 to 720° C., a temperature T4 at which a glass viscosity reaches 104 dPa·s of 1,320° C. or lower, a glass surface devitrification temperature (Tc) of T4+20° C. or lower, and an average coefficient of thermal expansion of 30×10−7 to 43×10−7/° C. at 50 to 350° C. The glass contains, as represented by mol % based on oxides, 50 to 80% of SiO2, 8 to 20% of Al2O3, 0 to 0.5% in total of at least one kind of alkali metal oxide selected from the group consisting of Li2O, Na2O and K2O, and 0 to 1% of P2O5.

A doped silica-titania (“DST”) glass article that includes a glass article having a glass composition comprising a silica-titania base glass containing titania at 7 to 14 wt. % and a balance of silica, and a dopant selected from the group consisting of (a) F at 0.7 to 1.5 wt. %, (b) B2O3 at 1.5 to 5 wt. %, (c) OH at 1000 to 3000 ppm, and (d) B2O3 at 0.5 to 2.5 wt. % and OH at 100 to 1400 ppm. The glass article has an expansivity slope of less than about 1.3 ppb/K2 at 20° C. For DST glass articles doped with F or B2O3, the OH level can be held to less than 10 ppm, or less than 100 ppm, respectively. In many aspects, the DST glass articles are substantially free of titania in crystalline form.

A device for manufacturing SiO2—TiO2 based glass by growing a glass ingot upon a target by a direct method. The device includes the target, comprising a thermal storage portion that accumulates heat by being preheated, and a heat insulating portion that suppresses conduction of heat from the thermal storage portion in a direction opposite to the glass ingot.
Abstract:
A single mode optical fiber having a core made from silica and less than or equal to about 6.5 weight % germania and having a maximum relative refractive index Δ1MAX. The optical fiber also has an inner cladding surrounding the core and having a minimum relative refractive index Δ2MIN. A difference between a softening point of the core and a softening point of the inner cladding is less than or equal to about 20° C., and Δ1MAX>Δ2MIN. The single mode optical fiber may also have an outer cladding surrounding the inner cladding made from silica or SiON. The outer cladding has a maximum relative refractive index Δ3MAX, and Δ3MAX>Δ2MIN. A method for manufacturing an optical fiber includes providing a preform to a first furnace, the preform, drawing the optical fiber from the preform, and cooling the drawn optical fiber in a second furnace.
Abstract:
The core region of an optical fiber is doped with chlorine in a concentration that allows for the viscosity of the core region to be lowered, approaching the viscosity of the surrounding cladding. An annular interface region is disposed between the core and cladding and contains a concentration of fluorine dopant sufficient to match the viscosity of the core. By including this annular stress accommodation region, the cladding layer can be formed to include the relatively high concentration of fluorine required to provide the desired degree of optical signal confinement (i.e., forming a “low loss” optical fiber). The inclusion of the annular stress accommodation region allows for the formation of a large effective area optical fiber that exhibits low loss (i.e.,
