    Abstract: A process for selectively substituting an aromatic nitro group with a halo group which comprises contacting the nitroaromatic compound with a phosphorushalide of formula: R n PX 5-n wherein n is selected from 0, 1, and 3; R is selected from the group consisting of C-6 to C-10 aryl and substituted aryl wherein the substituents are selected from the group consisting of: straight and branched chain alkyl, alkoxy, and haloalkyl; halogen, sulfonate and mixtures thereof; and X is a halogen in the presence of an arylphosphorusoxydihalide solvent. The use of an arylphosphorustetrahalide and particularly phenylphosphorustetrachloride is preferred. The arylphosphorustetrahalide can be prepared in situ by contacting a solution of the corresponding arylphosphorusdihalide in an arylphosphorusoxydihalide solvent with a halogen. The process can further comprise the step of heating the reaction mixture to maintain a temperature of from about 100°C to about 175°C for from about 1 hour to about 24 hours.

    Abstract: High yields of aromatic, aromatic acetic and olefinic acids, esters, amides and the like are derived from a pro­cess wherein a halo-hydrocarbon is carbonylated in the pres­ence of a palladium catalyst, a hindered amine base and phosphine in excess.     Abstract: A liquid phytoactive composition characterised in that it comprises:

    (a) an N-phosphonomethyl-N-carboxymethyl compound;
    (b) one or more liquid nonionic surfanctants;
    (c) a dispersing medium for the said N-phosphonomethyl-N-carboxymethyl compound; and

    (a) an herbicidally effective N-phosphonomethyl-N-carboxymethyl compound
    (b) one or more liquid nonionic surfactants;
    (c) a solvent for the said N-phosphonomethyl-N-carboxymethyl compound; and
    (d) one or more inert adjuvants is also disclosed.

    The formulation of this invention has the advantage that it can contain a high amount of active ingredient, is thermally stable over a wide temperature range, is compatible with and dilutable in both hard and soft water, and is also compatible and dilutable with a nitrogeneous fertilizer solution, and is minimally irritable to the eyes. Also, the formulation of this invention is stable upon aging over months of storage, over a wide temperature range. In addition, the nonionic surfactants are derived from naturally occurring products and are readily broken down by microorganisms.
