Meanwhile, when the spacer 21 is shortened in the opposite direction on the housing and the front end part or the spacer 21 is brought into contact with the surface S, the distance between the focus P and the surface S is relatively short, and the spot of light is small. This case is suitable for read of information encoded with a high density like a small-sized bar code.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To read and decode a second-dimensional bar code mark in any direction by obtaining the picture of the second-dimensional bar code mark, and converting the picture into a digital expression. CONSTITUTION: A CCD/CMD camera 18 picks up the picture of a second- dimensional bar code mark 20, and converts it into an electric signal. Then, the electric signal from the camera 18 is transmitted to a frame grabber circuit 16, and the circuit 16 converts the signal into the digital expression of the original picture. An analog signal 8 from the CCD/CMD camera 18 is converted into a gray level value of 8 bits, and transmitted to a decoder 14. The decoder 14 decodes the signal into the matrix of a code word value corresponding to the line and row of the second-dimensional bar code mark. The matrix of the code word value from the decoder 14 is further decoded into data which can be used by a high level decoder which can be realized by a separated computer program running on a host computer 12.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To prolong the service lives of the important components of a laser scanner, such as a laser diode, scanning motor, etc., and, at the same time, to reduce the power consumption of the components by automatically switching the scanner to a scan mode from a sleep mode. CONSTITUTION: When a laser scanner is in a sleep mode, an object sensor circuit 30 generates a steady-state voltage signal by processing pulse-modulated light reflected from a background surface. Then the circuit 30 generates positive and negative threshold voltage signals (respectively having larger and smaller values than the steady-state voltage signal has) from the steady-state voltage signal. A comparator detects an object when the object is put in the visual field of the scanner by comparing the inputted three signals with each other and also detects the object when the steady-state voltage signal becomes higher or lower than the positive or negative threshold voltage signal in accordance with the reflectance of the object. Upon detecting the object, the comparator instructs the scanner to return to a scan mode without hindering normal scanning processing by supplying a trigger signal to the scanner.

A mutli-row preamble code and mufti-row postamble code means 26 and 28 constitute the signature, and each code has a row identifier, which discriminates which row is scanned with a scanning beam 30 emitted from the scanner 12, and start/stop data which discriminates that each scanning beam traverses the boundary of a space including the signature.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To read a display having different reflectivity parts by providing one common scanning mirror, a short-range laser emitting optical device for short-range scanning operations, and a long-range laser emitting optical device. CONSTITUTION: When a trigger 12 is pulled to the position of a first detent at the time of long-range operations, a logic switch network 32 in a combinational dual scanner selects a long-range laser diode and the appropriate sighting scanning amplitude of a scanning motor is selected when the scanner is operated in a sighting mode. When the trigger 12 is pulled to the position of a second detent, the network 32 selects a laser beam for long range and a long-range scanning amplitude. At the time of short-range operations, on the other hand, an operator sets the sight of the scanner on bar codes at a short distance and actuates a trigger switch by directly pulling the trigger 12 to the position of the second detent. The network 32 selects a short-range laser diode 18 and a short-range scanning amplitude based on the shortest residence time at the position of the first detent.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To prevent bar code symbols from being unreadable by substituting illegal characters in a first expression with elements of corresponding characters in a second expression. CONSTITUTION: First, first and second original conversion images showing first and second analog scan signals are preserved. Thereafter, the second original conversion image is used to correct, namely, improve the first original conversion image, thereby generating a first corrected, namely, improved conversion image. With respect to correction of a distorted original conversion image, at least one element of a distorted character in the first distorted conversion image is changed based on at least one element of a corresponding character of the second original conversion image to generate the first corrected conversion image, thereby correcting the distorted original conversion image. Thus, all bar code symbols are accurately decoded from this first corrected conversion image, and they are prevented from being unreadable.
