Abstract: PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for compensating for a carrier frequency offset using comparison of power of spectrum edge are provided to compensate for a frequency offset rapidly and accurately even when pilot power is reduced or distortion is generated in a pilot signal. CONSTITUTION: An analog/digital converter(101) converts an analog input signal into a digital signal. An automatic frequency controller(103) compares powers of outer portions of both sides of a baseband signal spectrum converted into a digital signal to estimate a frequency offset. A loop filter(106) and a numerical controlled oscillator(102) compensates for the estimated frequency offset. A phase controller(104) compensates for a remaining phase offset of carrier. The loop filter accumulates the number of times of changing the sign of a signal output from a sign determinator of the phase offset estimator to judge a remaining frequency offset and variably adjusts the bandwidth of the loop filter to compensate for the estimated frequency offset.
