Abstract: Ordered packing, for a reactor for gas phase oxidation of o-xylene and/or naphthalene with molecular oxygen to form phthalic acid anhydride, has flow channels parallel to the long axis of reactor that fills the reactor cross-section to an edge gap whereby the maximum width of the edge gap measured in the plane at right angles to the long axis of the reactor is less than the hydraulic diameter of the flow channels. An ordered packing (1), for a reactor for the gas phase oxidation of o-xylene and/or naphthalene with a molecular oxygen containing gas stream to form phthalic acid anhydride, has flow channels (2) parallel to the long axis of the reactor that fill the reactor cross-section to an edge gap (3) whereby the maximum width of the edge gap (3) measured in the plane at right angles to the long axis of the reactor is less than the hydraulic diameter of the flow channels (2), preferably less than half of the hydraulic diameter of the flow channels (2) and the packing (1) is coated with an oxidation catalyst for phthalic acid anhydride. Independent claims are included for processes for the application or coating of an oxidation catalyst onto the packing (1) by dipping or spraying a suspension containing the catalyst or catalyst precursor onto the packing (1).

Abstract: A reactor, used for reactions between liquid/gas, or gases/liquids/solids, and has a vertical longitudinal axis with an educt feed pipe in the upper part of the reactor. Incoming gas (3) enters via an aperture in the base (5), and is distributed via a gas distributor module (9) that consists solely of straight pipes (14, 15). The gas distributor module has no curved or bent pipes. All pipes within the module are cylindrical and of circular cross section. Pipe sections are joined at right angles to each other. Horizontal distributor pipes (15) are at 40-90% of reactor chamber (4) depth.

Abstract: A shell-and-tube reactor is disclosed. Contact tubes are disposed within a cylindrical housing and are secured to tube plates. Gas and liquid phases are received via a feed opening in a lower end cap and discharged via an upper end cap in the housing. A distributor device is disposed in the housing, such that the tube plates serve as a horizontal plate for the distributor device to back up the gas phase and form a gas cushion, and vertical elements extend from the contact tubes. The vertical elements are adapted to conduct the liquid phase, are open in the upstream direction, and project outward in the direction of the feed opening through the gas cushion. The vertical elements further include at least one first opening on the circumference for the gas phase and at least one second opening for the liquid phase.

Abstract: Ordered packing (1) for a reactor has flow deviating sheets (A, B) arranged in the longitudinal direction of the reactor and parallel with a heating/cooling casing. Corrugated flow deviating sheets (A) are alternately arranged with planar flow deviating sheets (B) forming flow deviating channels (2). The flow deviating sheets (A) completely fill the cross-section of the reactor and the flow deviating sheets (B) expose an edge gap (3) on the inner wall of the reactor. Preferred Features: The edge gap is formed in a non uniform manner over the cross-section of the reactor having the largest possible radial extension in regions of the inner wall of the reactor into which flow deviating channels protrude and having the smallest possible radial extension in which flow deviating channels do not protrude. The flow deviating channels contain inert material and/or catalyst material.
