Abstract: The invention concerns the use of aqueous solutions or dispersions of copolymers which are obtained by the radical copolymerization of: (a) between 20 and 90 wt % of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated C4-C6 dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride as component A; (b) between 5 and 50 wt % of at least one C2-C6 olefin as component B; (c) between 5 and 50 wt % of at least one hydrophobic comonomer selected from the group comprising the long-chain olefins, esters of long-chain alcohols with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, amides of long-chain amides with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and the long-chain alkylvinyl ethers as component C; and (d) between 0 and 40 wt % of further comonomers which can be copolymerized with the above monomers as component D; the total of the amounts of components A, B, C and optionally D being 100 wt %. This copolymerization process is followed by at least partial esterification or hydrolysis and neutralizing and/or reaction with bases of the carboxyl groups which occur during hydrolysis. These solutions or dispersions are used for treating leather and/or furs.

Abstract: Aqueous solutions or dispersions of copolymers obtainable by the radical copolymerisation of A ) 50 to 60 mol% C6 to C40 mono-olefines or C6 to C40 alkyl vinyl ethers or mixtures of C6 to C40 alkyl vinyl ethers and up to 50 mol%, in relation to the entire quantity of the component A , C6 to C40 mono-olefines with B ) 60 to 40 mol% of monoethylenically unsaturated C4-C8 dicarboxylic acid anhydrides, or by the radical copolymerisation of A ) 50 to 90 wt % C6 to C40 alkyl acrylates or methyl acrylates or vinyl esters of C6 to C40 carboxylic acids or mixtures thereof with B ) 10 to 50 wt % of monoethylenically unsaturated C3 to C12 carboxylic acids, monoethylenically unsaturated C4 to C12 dicarboxylic acid anhydrides, semi-ester or semi-amides of monoethylenically unsaturated C4 to C12 dicarboxylic acids, amides of monoethylenically unsaturated C3 to C12 carboxylic acids or mixtures thereof, to form copolymers with molar masses of 500 to 30,000 whereby the carboxyl groups present in an aqueous medium are at least partly neutralised and part of the carboxyl groups may be amidated, and which are characterised by an emulsifier content of 0.5 to 40 wt % in relation to the quantity of copolymer. These aqueous solutions or dispersions are suitable for stuffing and fulling leathers and fur pelts.

USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) can be included in a wide variety of cleaning compsns. e.g. rust removers; car wash compsns.; electrolytic defatting/derusting/descaling products; steel passivation compsns. high pressure cleaners, etc. Unlike known iminodiacetic acid derivs.; (I) can be formulated without organic solvents. They are extremely effective chelating agents for heavy and alkaline earth metals, esp. Ca. (I) are readily biodegradable and of low toxicity.

The invention relates to the use of aqueous solutions or dispersions of said copolymers or hydrolysis products or polymeric analogous reaction products of said copolymers as tanning agents for single tannage, pre-tannage and co-tannage of dehaired skins and hides, and retannage of leather and skins.

Abstract: Use of iminodiacetic acid derivs. (I) as complexing agent or builder in alkaline cleaning formulations for the drinks and food industries is new. R=H, 1-4C alkyl, CH2CH2X, CH2CHOHX, -C(CH2OH)2X or CHY(-CH2)-nX; X= COOH (opt. as alkali metal or (substd.) ammonium salt) or CONH2 (opt. N substd.); Y = COOH (opt. in salt form as X); Z = H or OH; n = 1 or 2. Also new is an aq. cleaning formulation contg. 0.05-30 wt.% (I); 2-50 wt.% alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate and/or silicate, and 1-30 wt.% surfactant. USE/ADVANTAGE - The compsns. are used to clean bottles and machinery used in dairies, breweries or industries which mfr. and process preserved foods, baked goods, sugar, fat and meat. They give good results for removal of e.g. Ca salt deposits, hop resins, fat and dough residues etc. Unlike known iminodiacetic acid derivs., (I) can be formulated without organic solvents and also have an improved spectrum of activity. (I) are extraordinarily effective chelating agents for alkaline earth metals, e.g. Ca, and have extremely high Ca-binding capacity. They are readily biodegradable and have low toxicity.

Abstract: A process for the decomposition of peroxides (I), is effected by contacting a mixt. contg. (I) with oxide catalysts (II) of manganese, iron, nickel, cobalt, cerium, copper, molybdenum, vanadium and/or tungsten. Pref. (I) is hydrogen peroxide and/or an organic peroxide (II) contains manganese, iron, cerium, copper, vanadium and/or tungsten. The active mass of (II) consists of 1-100 wt.% manganese oxide and 99-0 wt.% of the oxides of iron, cerium, copper, vanadium and/or tungsten and is supported, pref. on cordierite, Al203, Ti02, silica gel and/or Zr02. The reaction is carried out at 0-80 deg.C and 0.01-50 bar. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is useful for the controlled decomposition of peroxides. The process stream is contaminated with heavy metal ions to a lesser extent than prior art processes.

Abstract: The invention relates to the use of water-soluble or dispersible graft polymers of vegetable and animal oils, obtainable by the radically initiated polymerisation A) of a monomer or monomer mixture of (a) 20 to 100 wt % monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and/or monoethylenically unsaturated sulphonic acids and/or monoethylenically unsaturated phosphonic acids or their alkaline, alkaline earth or ammonium salts, (b) 0 to 80 wt % other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which can be copolymerised with monomers (a), and (c) 0 to 5 wt % at least double-ethylenic unconjugated unsaturated monomers, in the presence of B) vegetable and/or animal oils, in the weight ratio of A:B of (80 to 1):(20 to 99) to stuff and full leathers and fur pelts. This provides soft leathers with a pleasant feel.
