    Abstract: The invention relates to the use of water-soluble or dispersible graft polymers of vegetable and animal oils, obtainable by the radically initiated polymerisation A) of a monomer or monomer mixture of (a) 20 to 100 wt % monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and/or monoethylenically unsaturated sulphonic acids and/or monoethylenically unsaturated phosphonic acids or their alkaline, alkaline earth or ammonium salts, (b) 0 to 80 wt % other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which can be copolymerised with monomers (a), and (c) 0 to 5 wt % at least double-ethylenic unconjugated unsaturated monomers, in the presence of B) vegetable and/or animal oils, in the weight ratio of A:B of (80 to 1):(20 to 99) to stuff and full leathers and fur pelts. This provides soft leathers with a pleasant feel.

    Abstract: Prodn. of leather and hides involves: (a) pretanning with an aldehyde tanning agent (I); and (b) retanning with a mineral tanning agent, with omission of the defatting, pickling, deliming and neutralisation steps.     Abstract: Aqueous solutions or dispersions of copolymers obtainable by the radical copolymerisation of A ) 50 to 60 mol% C6 to C40 mono-olefines or C6 to C40 alkyl vinyl ethers or mixtures of C6 to C40 alkyl vinyl ethers and up to 50 mol%, in relation to the entire quantity of the component A , C6 to C40 mono-olefines with B ) 60 to 40 mol% of monoethylenically unsaturated C4-C8 dicarboxylic acid anhydrides, or by the radical copolymerisation of A ) 50 to 90 wt % C6 to C40 alkyl acrylates or methyl acrylates or vinyl esters of C6 to C40 carboxylic acids or mixtures thereof with B ) 10 to 50 wt % of monoethylenically unsaturated C3 to C12 carboxylic acids, monoethylenically unsaturated C4 to C12 dicarboxylic acid anhydrides, semi-ester or semi-amides of monoethylenically unsaturated C4 to C12 dicarboxylic acids, amides of monoethylenically unsaturated C3 to C12 carboxylic acids or mixtures thereof, to form copolymers with molar masses of 500 to 30,000 whereby the carboxyl groups present in an aqueous medium are at least partly neutralised and part of the carboxyl groups may be amidated, and which are characterised by an emulsifier content of 0.5 to 40 wt % in relation to the quantity of copolymer. These aqueous solutions or dispersions are suitable for stuffing and fulling leathers and fur pelts.

    Abstract: Boric acid alkanolamine esters of formula B(OR)3 are used for deliming in leather prodn. R = H or gp. of formula (alkylene-O)n-(C(R1)H)m-NR2R3, or 2 R gps. together form gp. of formula (alkylene1)2 N-R3, or 3 R gps. together form gp. of formula -(alkylene1)3-N and at least 1 R is not H; alkylene is 2-6C; alkylene1 is 2-3C; R1 = H, Me or Et; R2 = H, 1-4C alkyl or Ph; R3 = H or 1-4C alkyl; n = 0-6; m = 2-10. ADVANTAGE - Evolution of H2S during deliming is limited. In an example, (A) a mixt. of 149g of tiethanolamine and 62g of orthoboric acid was heated at 80-83 deg. C, with removal of water at 25 mbars. The yield of triester was almost quantitative. (B) 100 pts. of steeped, delimed oxhide was soaked in a 50% bath contg 2% of the ester from (A), at 30 deg. C. After 30 mins., the pH was 8.9 and the H2S concn. was 140 ppm. After a further 60 mins., the hide was delimed, the H2S concn. was O and the pH was 9.2. The hides were clean and bright. Further treatment gave a soft, evenly dyed leather with very fine grain.
