Abstract: A silica-free, alpha -alumina containing catalyst support (I) is in the form of a hollow body in which at least part of the outer wall is cut through. Also claimed are: (i) a catalyst (II) consisting of alkali or alkaline earth metal(s) on support (I), (ii) production of (I) by forming a mixture of (A) a powder containing at least 95 wt% alpha -alumina and (B) a polymeric binder, removing the binder (B) and presintering the moulded product; (iii) production of catalyst (II) by making the formed support as in (ii), impregnating with solution(s) of metal salt(s) (as in i) and drying the impregnated support, and (iv) a silica-free, alpha -alumina containing catalyst (II) made by process (iii).

Abstract: Linear polymers (I) contg. units of formula -CH2-CH(NH2)-and having Fikentscher K value (in 0.5% aq. NaCl at 25 deg. C) 10-200 are prepd. in powder form by reacting a powdered polymer -CH2CH(NHCHO)- (II) of N-vinylformamide with a gaseous-hydrogen halide acid at up to 200 deg. C in presence of max. 5% water on wt. (II). Pref. (III) is reacted with HCl or HBr in presence of max. 2.5 wt.% water, partic. in absence of water. Reaction is carried out in inert solvent which does not dissol-e (I) and (II) particles, esp. dioxan, terahydrofuran, or cyclohexane. Or reaction is carried out in a 1-8C alcohol, partic. with inert suspending agent also present. Particle size (II) is 10-1000, partic. 50-400 microns. Reaction temp. is 35-150 deg. C.

USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) particles, treated with finely divided inorganic solids, as dewatering, retention, or flocculating agent in mfr of paper (claimed). (II) particles are substantially homogenously hydrolysed, whereas in process of US4623699 hydrolysing agent diffuses only slowly into hard (II) particle, leaving core of unhydrolysed polyvinyl formamide, and (I) dissolve more rapidly in water.

Abstract: Paper and paperboard of high dry strength are produced by adding a dry strength enhancer to the paper stock and dewatering the paper stock with sheet formation by using as the dry strength enhancer a mixture of a cationic polymer which contains as characteristic monomers copolymerized units of (a) diallyldimethylammonium chloride, (b) N-vinylamine or (c) a substituted or unsubstituted N-vinylimidazoline and has a K value of not less than 30, and natural potato starch which is converted into a water-soluble form by heating in an aqueous medium at above the gelatinization temperature of natural potato starch in the absence of any oxidizing agents or alkali.
