    Abstract: Linear polymers (I) contg. units of formula -CH2-CH(NH2)-and having Fikentscher K value (in 0.5% aq. NaCl at 25 deg. C) 10-200 are prepd. in powder form by reacting a powdered polymer -CH2CH(NHCHO)- (II) of N-vinylformamide with a gaseous-hydrogen halide acid at up to 200 deg. C in presence of max. 5% water on wt. (II). Pref. (III) is reacted with HCl or HBr in presence of max. 2.5 wt.% water, partic. in absence of water. Reaction is carried out in inert solvent which does not dissol-e (I) and (II) particles, esp. dioxan, terahydrofuran, or cyclohexane. Or reaction is carried out in a 1-8C alcohol, partic. with inert suspending agent also present. Particle size (II) is 10-1000, partic. 50-400 microns. Reaction temp. is 35-150 deg. C.

    Abstract: In the prodn. of paper, paperboard and cardboard with high dry strength by adding a dry strength agent (I) to the pulp and dewatering, with sheet formation, the novelty is that (I) is an aq. soln. of mixts. of enzymatically degraded starches (II) with a viscosity of 20-2000 mPa.s (in 7.5% aq. soln. at 45 deg.C) and cationic polymers (III) derived from (a) diallyldimethylammonium chloride (IV), (b) N-vinylamine (V) or (c) N-vinylimidazolines of the formula (VI). R1 = H, 1-18C alkyl or C6H3R5R6; R5 and R6 = H, 1-4C alkyl or Cl; R2 = H, 1-18C alkyl, benzyl or glycidyl; R3 and R4 = H or 1-4C alkyl; X(-) = an acid gp.; which have a Fikentscher K value of min. 30 (In 5% aq. NaCl soln. at 25 deg.C and polymer concn. of 0.5wt.%).
