Abstract: This invention concerns water-soluble polymers which include units of formula (I) and/or (II) as characteristic structural elements, in which R stands for H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl, R and R are defined independently from each other as R or are selected from among substituted alkyl, substituted cycloalkyl, substituted aryl or substituted aralkyl, wherein the substituents are selected from among OH, O-alkyl, O-aryl, SH, S-alkyl, S-aryl, NH2, NH-alkyl, NH-aryl, N(alkyl)2, optionally in protonated form, N(alkyl)3 Z , wherein Z stands for the radical of an inorganic or organic acid, COOH, COO-alkyl, CONH2, CONH-alkyl, CON(alkyl)2, CN and SO3H, and the indexes x each stand independently from each other for a whole number from 1 to 20, and the acid addition salts of these polymers; processes for producing these polymers, as well as their use in cosmetic substances.

Abstract: A process for producing long-shelf-life aqueous solutions of vinyl-amine-unit-containing polymers by the hydrolysis of N-vinyl-carbonamide-containing polymers with acids in an aqueous medium and removing the carboxylic acids separated from the polymers as esters from the aqueous polymer solution following hydrolysis and by the addition of at least stoichiometric quantities of at least one C1 to C6 alcohol and distilling the esters off from the reaction mixture. The invention also relates to the use of the long-shelf-life aqueous solutions of vinyl-amine-unit-containing polymers as dry and wet consolidating agents in paper manufacture.

Abstract: Graft polymers obtainable by the radically initiated polymerisation of (A) monomers or monomer mixture of (a) 1 to 100 wt.% N-vinyl carboxylic acid amides of the formula (I) in which R , R = H and C1 to C6 alkyl, (b) 0 to 99 wt.% other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers copolymerisable with the monomers (a), and (c) 0 to 5 wt.% of at least two ethylenically unsaturated monomers with unconjugated double bonds in the molecule; in the presence of (B) polymers containing units of vinyl esters of saturated C1 to C4 carboxylic acids and/or vinyl alcohol units, or mixtures containing these polymers and polymers containing at least 3 alkylene oxide units or polytetrahydrofurane; in the ratio by weight (A) : (B) of (95 to 10) : (5 to 90), possibly followed by the separation of the group (II) from the polymerised monomers (I) of the graft polymer, with the formation of units of the formula (III); process for the production of the graft polymers and use of the graft polymers described above in the production of paper, paperboard and cardboard as a dry and wet strengthening agent, as a retention and dewatering agent and as a promoter in diketene gumming and as a starch cationisation agent, as a dispersant for pigments and as a creping auxiliary in the production of tissue papers.

Abstract: In a cationic modification process for starch, starch is reacted with polymers that contain amino and/or ammonium groups in an aqueous medium at temperatures from 115 to 180 DEG C under an increased pressure and in the absence of oxidisers, polymerisation initiators and alkali. The reaction is conducted so that maximum 10% by weight starch has its molar weight reduced. Also disclosed is the use of the thus obtained reaction products as dry strength agents for paper.

Abstract: A process for the production of stable water-in-oil emulsions of hydrolysed polymers of n-vinyl amide of formula (I) in which R, R = H or C1-C6 alkyl, by the polymerisation of compounds of formula (I) alone or mixed with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of polymerisation initiators and emulsifiers in the form of water-in-oil emulsions to form water-in-oil polymer emulsions followed by the hydrolysis of the polymers in the form of the water-in-oil polymer emulsions in the presence of acids or bases and 1 to 30 wt % in relation to the polymers of emulsifiers, in which the emulsifiers used are mixtures of (a) 5 to 95 wt % of a block or graft copolymer of the structure (A-B)m, (A)nB or (B)nA in which A is a hydrophobic homo or copolymer with a degree of polymerisation of at least 3, B is a hydrophilic homo or copolymer with a degree of polymerisation of at least 3, m >/= 1 and n >/= 2, and (b) 5 to 95 wt % of another water-in-oil emulsifier with a molar mass of under 1000 g/mol. The polymer emulsions thus obtained may be used as retention and flocculation agents in paper production, to purify waste water and sludges in purification plants, as a dispersant and protective colloid for drilling muds and as a cement additive.

Abstract: The invention concerns the use of polymers which can be produced by reacting (a) polymers containing vinylamine units with (b) compounds comprising aldehyde or keto groups and optionally (c) compounds comprising NH groups and/or OH groups, and which further have aminal, semi-aminal and/or aminal-acetal structures and optionally non-reacted vinylamine units as additives to detergents for inhibiting the transfer of dye during the washing process. The invention further concerns polymers which contain aminal, semi-aminal and/or aminal-acetal structures and which are obtained by reacting (a) polymers containing vinylamine units with (b) compounds comprising aldehyde or keto groups and (c) compounds comprising NH groups and/or OH groups. The invention also concerns detergents containing the above polymers in amounts ranging from 0.05 to 10 wt %.

Fikentscher in 5 wt % aqueous solution at 25 DEG C and pH 7), process for producing graft polymers containing N-vinyl units by the polymerisation of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of polymers containing at least 5 wt % units of formula (I) and/or (II) as the graft base in the ratio by weight of 100 : 1 to 1 : 100 and use of the graft polymers as dispersants for pigments, additives in washing and cleaning agents, compacting agents for paper, and floor and fertiliser compacting agents.
