    Abstract: In a process for preparing 1,4-butanediol, tetrahydrofuran and gamma-butyrolactone by oxidation of butane to give a product stream comprising maleic anhydride, absorption of maleic anhydride from the product stream using a high-boiling alcohol to give a liquid absorption product comprising monoesters and diesters of maleic acid and also high-boiling alcohol, after-esterification of the liquid absorption product and subsequent hydrogenation of the after-esterified product in the liquid phase, the high-boiling alcohol is a polyhydric alcohol having a boiling point at atmospheric pressure of above 233° C. and the after-esterified product has an acid number of less than 30 mg KOH/g and a water content of less than 1% by weight.

    Abstract: A method for producing butyrolactones of general formula (I), wherein the substituents R and R stand for hydrogen, alkyl, aryl hydroxyalkyl or optionally substituted aryl and trialkylsilyl groups, by reacting alkynes of general formula (II) R -CC-R , wherein R and R have the above-mentioned meaning, with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a rhodium catalyst at pressures ranging from 20 to 300 bars and by hydrogenation of intermediately formed and as yet non-hydrogenated 2(5H) furanones. According to the inventive method a) the reaction carbonylation mixture is reacted with hydrogen at temperatures of 150-250 DEG C and at pressures ranging between 100 and 300 bars, b) the precipitated catalyst is separated and returned to the cabonylation reaction and c) butyrolactone is obtained from the de-catalysed reaction mixture by means of distillation.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing 1,4-butanediol and possibly .gamma.-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofurane by oxidation of butane or benzol into a product flow containing maleic anhydride, absorption of maleic anhydride from the product flow by means of an inert, high-boiling solvent in an absorption stage, which yields a liquid absorption product, and esterification of said liquid absorption product with a C1-C5 esterification alcohol in an esterification step, yielding an esterification product containing the corresponding diester and high-boiling inert solvent. This is followed by hydrogenation of the esterification product, which results in an hydrogenation product containing the products 1,4-butanediol and optionally .gamma.-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofurane as well as the esterification alcohol. The hydrogenation product is separated by distillation into the products and the esterification alcohol and the esterification alcohol is returned to the esterification zone. Prior to hydrogenation the esterification product is separated by distillation under reduced pressured into the diester and the inert solvent, the inert solvent is returned to the absorption stage and the diester is hydrogenated in the liquid phase on a fixed-bed catalyst.
