Abstract: 1. A multistage process for dewatering sewage sludges by mixing these homogeneously with inert additives, such as finely divided coal or ash or mixtures thereof, adding organic flocculants, removing the greater part of the water, in a first dewatering step, by gravity filtration without applying a pressure differential and then effecting further dewatering in a second dewatering step, by pressure filtration on filter presses, in order to obtain filter cakes which can be combusted, with the utilization of their calorific content, wherein the additives, such as finely divided coal or ash or mixtures thereof, are added in an amount of from 0.5 to 1.5 parts by weight per part by weight of sludge solids and from 1 to 7 kg of organic flocculant/tonne of sludge solids is added to the sewage sludges before or during admixture of the additives.

Abstract: A process for dewatering sewage sludges, the dewatering characteristics of which have been improved by adding an organic flocculant, on a chamber filter press, wherein the greater part of the water in the flocculated sludges is removed by gravity filtration in a process step upstream of the chamber filter press, without application of a pressure difference, and the actual pressure filtration, on the chamber filter press, is only then carried out. In principle, commercial products can be used as the organic flocculant. These are water-soluble, macromolecular compounds which have been obtained by polymerization or copolymerization of acrylamide, acrylic cid and/or their salts, or of esters of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid with specifically modified alcohol components.

Abstract: Aq coating and covering media contain short fibres having a high degree of fibrillation, from water-, alkali- and acid-insoluble thermoplastics. They are useful as paints, resin-bonded plasters, adhesives, paper coating compsns., putties and cements. Thickening activity of most water-repellent polymer fibrils can reach, in aq. systems, that of many water-soluble thickners. Films obtd. are waterproof. A multistage process for dewatering sewage sludges of which the sludge solids contain less than 70% of organic matter, and whose dewatering characteristics have been improved by adding organic flocculants, on a filter press, using inert additives, wherein the sewage sludges are concentrated, by adding an organic flocculant during thickening by gravity sedimentation, from 0.5-5.0% by weight of sludge solids to 6-14, and especially 8-12, % by weight of sludge solids, the sewage sludges are mixed with additives, such as finely divided coal or ash or mixtures thereof, in an amount of from 0.5 to 1.5 parts by weight per part by weight of sludge solids, and the sludges are treated, before, during or after admixture of the additives, with a further 2-8 kg of organic flocculant/tonne of sludge solids and are then dewatered on the filter press to produce filter cakes which can be combusted with the utilization of their calorific content.

Abstract: Purificn. of waste water generated during mfr. of styrene bead polymers (I) in presence of vinyl pyrrolidone of vinyl alcohol polymers as suspension stabilisers, comprises adding a pptg. agent (II) then removing the sepd. suspended solids. (II) is 0.05-3, esp. 0.1-1 pt. per 100 pts. waste water of a water-soluble amide-NH4 or diNH4 salt of a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer of up to 50% maleic anhydride content which has Staudinger index (in DMF at 25 degrees C) 5-150, pref. 10-60 cc./g. The pH of the water is adjusted to 3 with inorganic acid. Pref. (II) is added as a 0.1-20, esp. 1-10 wt. % aq. soln. or dispersion. Almost complete removal of suspended solids is economically achieved leaving clear water of very low residual organic C content.
