    Abstract: Graft polymers obtainable by the radically initiated polymerisation of (A) monomers or monomer mixture of (a) 1 to 100 wt.% N-vinyl carboxylic acid amides of the formula (I) in which R , R = H and C1 to C6 alkyl, (b) 0 to 99 wt.% other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers copolymerisable with the monomers (a), and (c) 0 to 5 wt.% of at least two ethylenically unsaturated monomers with unconjugated double bonds in the molecule; in the presence of (B) polymers containing units of vinyl esters of saturated C1 to C4 carboxylic acids and/or vinyl alcohol units, or mixtures containing these polymers and polymers containing at least 3 alkylene oxide units or polytetrahydrofurane; in the ratio by weight (A) : (B) of (95 to 10) : (5 to 90), possibly followed by the separation of the group (II) from the polymerised monomers (I) of the graft polymer, with the formation of units of the formula (III); process for the production of the graft polymers and use of the graft polymers described above in the production of paper, paperboard and cardboard as a dry and wet strengthening agent, as a retention and dewatering agent and as a promoter in diketene gumming and as a starch cationisation agent, as a dispersant for pigments and as a creping auxiliary in the production of tissue papers.

    Abstract: Beta-alanine-N,N-diacetic acid (I), alkali metal or ammonium salt, is used as complex former for alkaline earth and heavy metal ions in bleaching wood pulp, mfr. of paper, and deinking of printed waste paper. Prepn. comprises reacting iminodiacetic and acrylic acids in non basic aq. medium (EP 356 972). ADVANTAGE - Improved oxidative or reductive bleaching c.f. nitrilotriacetic acid (I) amt. of waterglass (stabiliser for H2O2) may be reduced, for min. deterioration in dewatering and deposition on paper and felt of paper machine, amt. of H2O2 in deinking may be reduced, and deposition of carbonates, silicates, and phosphates is min.. In an example, 100 g mechanical wood pulp suspension (pulp consistency 20 %, all pts. wt.) was mixed thoroughly with, (on dried wt.) wood pulp, 2 % waterglass, 0.75 % aq. NaOH, 1 % H2O2, and 0.06 % (I) as Na salt and kept at 50 deg. C for 2 hrs.. Paper (surface wt. 400 g/q. m) made from the bleached pulp had whiteness 67.6 % (deg. of remission, Elrepho photometer, wavelength 457 nm( 67.6 %. C.f. process was repeated except that (I) was replaced by (II) as Na salt; whiteness of paper was 66.9%

    Abstract: The invention relates to aqueous dispersions of reactive gluing agents containing 0.1 to 10 weight per cent of water-soluble or water-dispersible polymeric protective colloids which can be obtained by reacting polymers containing amino groups from the group: polymers containing vinylamine units; polyamidoamines; polyamidoamines grafted with ethylenimine - with diketenes at a weight ratio polymers:diketenes of 10000:1 to 1:3. The invention also relates to a method for producing aqueous dispersions of reactive gluing agents by homogenising said reactive gluing agents in an aqueous solution of at least one of the aforementioned protective colloids at temperatures of 20 to 90 DEG C under the effect of shear forces, and to the use of aqueous dispersions of gluing agents thus obtained as pulp sizing agents in the production of paper, board and cardboard and for hydrophobing cellulose fibers.
