    Abstract: 1479901 Electro-physical measurement; particle analysis COULTER ELECTRONICS Ltd 23 Sept 1974 [26 Sept 1973] 41368/74 Heading G1N(C) In a Coulter type particle analyzer, a "twochamber" tube is provided whereby clean electrolyte can be flowed past the aperture to waste, in a manner similar to that disclosed in Specification 1341336 and a constriction in the flow-path is arranged to increase the velocity behind the aperture. OVERALL SYSTEM FIG. 1. A double tube 13 is sealed into a coupling block 19 attached by screws 59 to the head-block 58, for easy interchange. The electrolyte system is electrically isolated from waste 42 and supply reservoir 52 by drip feed tanks 24, 29. The sample and electrolyte are moved through the apparatus by vacuum applied to the waste drip tank 24. The clean electrolyte flow is regulated by a constriction 27. Several variations of double tube construction are disclosed with reference to Figs. 2 ... 13 which are substantially self explanatory. Figs. 2, 5, 6, 7 only are shown as typical.

    Abstract: A liquid sampling, metering and transfer valve assembly for providing plural dilutions of a single liquid sample comprising a pair of outer stationary elements sandwiching a rotatable element, the rotatable element carrying precise volume segmenting passageways, the outer elements carrying counterpart passageways for communicating to the exterior of the valve assembly, one outer element carrying loops each for storing a precise volume of diluent and the other valve elements carrying through passageways for communicating to and from said respective loops. A continuous body of sample is introduced into the valve assembly along a path through a pair of the segmenting passageays and a pair of aliquot portions isolated from said parth. The rotatable element is operated to direct one aliquot along with the content of one loop to an exterior location for mixing. The other sample aliquot is retained. The thus formed mixture is reintroduced into the valve assembly along a path through the third segmenting passageway and an aliquot thereof is isolated. Both it and the retained sample aliquot then are directed from the valve assembly to respective testing locations along with the respective content of the remaining loops. Channels are provided in the inner faces of the outer elements and communicatively coupled, entry and outer ports enable cleaning reagent to be introduced therein, the sandwiched element being rotated 360 degrees whereby to rinse the facing interior surfaces of the valve assembly.

    Abstract: Bellows pump and actuating apparatus for automatically aspirating biological sample fluid material into and through an aspirating probe from a source of fluid sample material, into and through a sample segmenting valve for passage through a counting device. A plurality of bellows members, each having an axis of compression and expansion, has one end mounted on a fixed member. Timing and stroke members are provided for actuating movement of the other end of the bellows members, which are free to be moved parallel to their axis. A positioning member positions the timing and stroke members coaxially of the bellows members at preselected times. A drive member moves the timing and stroke members parallel to the axis of compression and expansion of the bellows members. Photo-optical indicating members, cooperating with the positioning member, interrupts the drive to the positioning member when the timing and stroke members are coaxially aligned with the bellows members. Thereupon, the drive member actuates the timing and stroke members for compressing or expanding the bellows, effectively producing pressure or vacuum to aspirate the biological sample fluid material into and through the counting device. Aspirating probe washing and drying apparatus is operably connected to the segmenting valve and includes a sealing member for sealing the probe from the ambient atmosphere and a biohazard containment member for avoiding operator contact with the sample fluid material during operation of the apparatus.

    Abstract: Valve arrangement for automatic sampler with diluent metering and mixing as in 2500527 has the sampling and diluent pistons operated by rotating eccentric drive which is coupled to the main valve by means of a follower in a groove on a rotating cylinder which actuates a rotatable shaft on the valve. This causes the valve to move between two posns. depending on the posn. of the rotating piston drive. In its first posn. it serves to connect the diluent chamber with the diluent outlet, while in its second posn. it connects the diluent outlet with the sample inlet and outlet lines. The cam follower has two curved profiles on it and the eccentric cam runs against these to push the valve from one posn. to the other. For use with accurate metering of samples where it is of advantage to dilute these accurately. The system carries out this function automatically for blood samples and other liquids. The system in the parent patent has the problem that the piston coupling used to operate the control valve is expensive and difficult to operate in connection with the rotating arm. The modified system is simpler, cheaper and more effective.

    Abstract: A liquid sampling, metering and transfer valve assembly for providing plural dilutions of a single liquid sample and comprising a pair of outer stationary elements sandwiching a rotatable element.     Abstract: A central cylindrical member has axially extending grooves opening to its circumferential surface and means for frictionally holding hematocrit capillary tubes inserted into the grooves. A transparent coaxial cylindrical tubular member is telescoped over the central cylindrical member and has a scale with a reference area provided thereon so that the hematocrit tubes can be aligned with chosen locations circumferentially along the reference area. The reference area has indicia establishing a lower limit which substantially lies in a plane normal to the axis of the cylindrical members and an upper limit whose distance from the lower limit increases uniformly circumferentially around the cylindrical members in one revolution. The reference area is everywhere divided into the same number of equal divisions, the division dimensions varying as the distance between upper and lower limits of the reference area. The exterior cylindrical member is rotatable relative to the central cylindrical member so that the reference area may be moved relative to a spun down hematocrit tube at a point where the contents of the tube are subtended between the upper and lower limits of the reference area so that percentage packed cell volume may be read directly on the reference scale. A toroidal magnifier may be coaxially slidable on the exterior cylindrical member to aid in reading the scale.
