    Abstract: PURPOSE: To make it possible to drastically decrease various phenomena due to optical hysteresis or to suppress the same by directly bringing at least one of electrodes of a ferroelectric liquid crystal display into contact with a liquid crystal medium. CONSTITUTION: The electrodes of the ferroelectric liquid crystal(FLC) display device includes the plural counter electrodes arranged to longitudinal and transverse stripe states in front and rear of the FLC layer. Both electrodes preferably come into direct contact with the liquid crystal medium and the electrodes in direct contact with the liquid crystal medium can simultaneously be an oriented layer if the electrode material is adequately selected. Bringing of the one electrode into contact with the medium and insulating the other electrode therefrom are advantageous for prevention of shorting with the display of a large area in particular. The lowering of the optical hysteresis is more significant as the electrical conductivity of the electrodes is higher. The oriented layers are formed out of two layers and the oriented layer facing the medium is formed out of a conductive org. material and the second layer of the further higher conductive material.

Use of the process according to the invention ensures long-term functioning of the switching and display device, even in the case of repeated regeneration of the quasi-bookshelf geometry, and prevents worsening in the contrast and brightness and the occurrence of ghost images.
