    Abstract: A system and method of conducting commercial activities such as an auction in a rather localized area (such as a shopping mall). Potential consumers located in the local area have a mobile wireless communications device (for example, a smart cellular phone or a 2-way radio or a Bluetooth communication device) including a set of stored instructions allowing the device to be programmed with a set of desired transactions and preferences such as the brands or transaction types which the consumer prefers. Merchants are connected to receive a communication from the communications device and respond to the desired transaction and preferences by proposing goods or services at specific terms such as price. The mobile wireless communications device associated with the potential consumer has the potential to receive communications from merchants (either directly or through an intermediate system) and to transmit a communication back to the merchant indicating the potential offer so that a merchant can revise or improve the offer. In this way, local merchants can be aware of the offers that a consumer receives and can improve on those offers to secure the potential consumer's business. While the actual transaction may be conducted in person at the merchant, one can envision a system where the transaction is completed through the wireless communication system with the payment occurring through charge or other electronic transaction and the delivery of the goods or service through conventional delivery channels.

    Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for enhanced data transmission within a cellular telephone system having multiple assigned voice channels separated by adjacent buffer voice channels. A data processing terminal (66) is utilized to divide the data stream into multiple relatively short data packets which are then sequentially transmitted (70) within alternate adjacent buffer voice channels. By switching from one adjacent buffer voice channel to a subsequent adjacent buffer voice channel, in a predetermined and repetitive order, as each data packet is transmitted, the amount of interference experienced in any one assigned voice channel is minimized. Synchronization between adjacent data packets may be achieved by either utilizing adjacent buffer voice channels in a predetermined and repetitive order or by concatenating an indication of the next buffer voice channel utilized with each data packet. A synchronization packet may also be included with each data packet to permit synchronization between adjacent data packets at the receiver (72).

    Abstract: A method and system for maintaining a routing path between a selected workstation (18) and a mobile workstation (36) within a multisegment local area network (10) wherein individual segments (12,14,16) are interconnected by a router device (28,30) and wherein selected segments (14,16) include radio frequency transceivers adapted to provide a wireless communications link with mobile workstations (36). Each time communication is established between a mobile workstation (36) and a selected workstation (18), two routing table entries are established which identify a segment location (14) for the mobile workstation (36) and a segment location (12) for the selected workstation (18) within a routing table (86,84) associated with each router device (28,30). Thereafter, all routing table entries which identify the segment location (14) for the mobile workstation (36) are automatically deleted in response to a termination of communications between the mobile workstation (36) and the radio frequency transceiver. Routing path determination does not require the maintenance of routing path information at each workstation within the multisegment local area network.

    Abstract: In an information processing system, a method and system are provided to perform 1/0 (Input/Output) operations for an interpretative based program (eg. a JAVA applet or application) that is executing on an Interpretative Machine (IM) ( eg.     Abstract: MICROWORD CONTROL SYSTEM UTILIZING MULTIPLEXED PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC ARRAYS A microword control system is provided for producing the sequences of microwords used to control the execution of processor instructions in a microprogrammed digital data processor.     Abstract: A method for delivering electronic services in a personal area network (PAN) can include providing a kiosk in a publicly traversable area. The kiosk can be configure d to deliver electronic services over short-range radio communications links to wireless devices in a personal area network (PAN). The kiosk also can be configured to communicate over an existing physical communications link medium. A PAN can be established in the publicly traversable area. Electronic services can be selectably retrieved through the existing physical communications link mediu m into the kiosk. Finally, the retrieved selected electronic services can be delivered to wireless devices in the PAN over the short-range radio communications link. Notably, the step of establishing a PAN in the publicly traversable area can include establishing a BLUETOOTH-based PAN wit h wireless devices in the publicly traversable area. In addition, the step of providing a kiosk first can include retrofitting an existing kiosk both with a short-range radio frequency communications system; and with a host computing device for selectively retrieving electronic services over the existing physical communications link medium, and for delivering selected electronic services to the wireless devices in the PAN. Second, the retrofitted kiosk can beactivated in the publicly traversable area.
