    Abstract: The invention consists of a set top interface box(fig 1,30) to allow a number of data sources (including video) to be connected to a television receiver. The user can select between sources using a handset(20) and includes picture in picture display facilities. The invention comprises an analogue multiplexer 31 to allow switching between the various sources 34,35,42,44,40 the output of which is connected to a video processor 39. The video processor 39 is connected to amongst others an audio control 46, a CPU 48, an infrared I/O device 50 and a modem 52. The set top unit (30) can also include facilities for decoding encrypted video signals(e.g. for pay per view) and decompressing video 38. In use the user would be presented with a graphical representation of their display options(fig 18) and could point and select(135) to determine which sources would go to which destinations(VCR, full screen, picture in picture).

    Abstract: To enable assigning of disk drives associated with both a host computer and a remote computer coupled together by a communication link using normal DOS driver letters, DOS initialisation of the host computer is postponed until a remote session is established with the remote computer and the remote computer provides information regarding the disk drives associated therewith. Upon receiving the disk drive information from the remote computer, the host completes its initialisation and assigns drive letters associated with diskette drives associated with the host computer to diskette drives associated with the remote computer. Thus, host diskette drives are logically replaced by remote diskette drives. Any hard disk drives associated with the remote computer are assigned the next available drive letter on the host computer. Thus, the host computer and the remote computers become tightly coupled in that a user of the remote system has access to the diskette drives and any hard disk drives on the remote computer and any hard disk drives on the host computer.

    Abstract: Advantage is taken of Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuit design and manufacture to provide, in a digital data handling system handling display signal streams, a video processor which is capable of high performance due to vector processing and special addressing modes. The video processor has, on a single VLSI device, a plurality of processors which cooperate for generating video signal streams and which employ distinctive addressing modes for memory elements of the device. Each of the plurality of processors has associated instruction and data caches, which are joined together by a wide data bus formed on the same substrate as the processors, and further has registers for controlling access, and the modes of access, to data held in memory.

    Abstract: A computer system having four states of power management: a normal operating state, a standby state, a suspend state, and an off state. A control unit controls transitions between the various states. The standby state is characterized by devices, such as a video controller and a hard drive, being placed into a low-power mode transparent to the operating system and the applications executing on the computer system. The suspend state is characterized by executing code being interrupted and the state of the computer system being saved to a file on the hard drive in such a manner that system power may be removed after the state of the computer system is saved to the hard drive. Later, after system power is restored, the state of the computer system is resumed by reading from the hard drive and loading it in such a manner that the operating system and application programs are not adversely affected. The normal operating state and the off state correspond to the typical on and off states of more conventional computer systems. A single switch causes transitions between the various states. A visual feedback device, such as an LED is used to indicate the state of the computer system. While no power management driver is active, the control unit delays state transitions until a suitable power management driver is active.
