Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject fiber, having a high elastic modulus and excellent in compression characteristics at a low cost by applying a boron compound to a pitch yarn prepared by melt spinning mesophase pitch and calcining the resultant fiber at a high temperature. CONSTITUTION:Mesophase pitch obtained by extracting heavy oil with a solvent or hydrogenating the heavy oil and distilling the hydrogenated oil is melt spun and a boron compound (preferably with 0.2-1.0wt.% boron content) is applied to the resultant pitch yarn. The pitch yarn is then infusibilized and calcined at >=2500 deg.C temperature to afford the aimed fiber. Furthermore, the boron compound is most preferably used together with an aqueous emulsion of a polysiloxane compound.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To increase a ratio of infusibilization and obtain a carbon fiber with a ready handling at a low cost by spinning a pitch so as to have a finess lower than a specified value, accommodating the resultant staples in a vessel, infusibilize the staples and then calcining the staples in an inert atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A pitch is initially spun preferably using the flash spinning, etc., so as to have a finess lower than 0.33 denier and formed into staples. The resultant staples are then accommodated in a vessel and infusibilized or infusibilized in an oxidative atmosphere in a fluidized state. The infusibilized fiber is subsequently calcined in an inert atmosphere to provide the objective fiber. In case of infusibilization of the staples in a vessel, a vessel made of stainless is preferably used as the vessel and the vessel accommodating the pitch is preferably subjected to oxidation treatment in an oxidative liquid followed by treatment thereof in an oxidative gas. As the method for infusibilizing the pitch fiber in a fluidized state, an oxidative gas is preferably blown in the fluidizing zone equipped under a spinning machine while allowing the pitch fiber to fall to the zone.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject high elongation fiber useful as a heat insulator and having such a handling property that a stable carbonization process thereof may be carried out in a continuous system, in case of precarbonization treatment of an infusibilized fiber by cooling the fiber at a specified rate or more as soon as the fiber reaches the maximum treatment temperature of the precarbonization. CONSTITUTION:In case of precarbonization treatment of an infusibilized fiber obtained by spinning a pitch as the raw material and then infusibilizing the resultant fiber, as soon as the fiber reaches the maximum treatment temperature of the precarbonization, the fiber is cooled at a rate of 8 deg.C/min or more to provide the objective fiber. In addition, the precarbonization is preferably carried out under an inert atmosphere, e.g., at 400-800 deg.C.
