Abstract: A reproduction system which includes inter alia a user interface providing a means for programming a plurality of features associated with the execution of a copying job. The system includes a means for comparing the most recently selected feature with all previously programmed features in order to identify any mutually exclusive or undesirable feature pairs. Abstract: Direct Memory Access Refresh System In a controller for a host machine such as an electrostatographic copier having a central processing unit module connected via a system bus to an input-output processing unit module, a direct memory access system functioning as part of the input-output processing unit module and operative to provide a high-speed means of refreshing and updating control registers in the host machine by direct accessing of memory in the central processing unit module. The direct memory access system may be programmed to synchronously refresh-update the host machine's control registers as in its normal mode and also asynchronously refresh-update the control registers as in the abnormal mode of a detected electrical disturbance in the electro-sensitive periphery surrounding the control registers, thus requiring restoring thereof. High-speed movement of data by the direct memory access system is achieved through dedicating a portion of random access memory in the central processing unit module for such accessing, and transferring control of the system bus from the central processing unit module to the direct memory access system. This enables data accessed through a fixed sequence of addresses from dedicated memory to be transferred directly to the host machine's control registers without incurring time constants that would otherwise be had if the data were to be manipulated by a central processor in the central processing unit module

Abstract: A print media sheet tray control system for use with a printing system having a controller is provided. The control system includes a print media sheet tray which is configurable, through use of the controller, in a selected one a first operational mode or a second operational mode. The configurable print media sheet tray is characterized by a print media attribute set having a selected state which can be either a first state or a second state. If the configurable print media sheet tray is configured in the first operational mode, then the controller prohibits printing system operation if the selected state has been altered from the first state to the second state. On the other hand, if the configurable print media sheet tray is configured in the second operational mode, then operation of the printing system is permitted provided the alteration was achieved pursuant to a preselected alteration process.

Abstract: A mailboxing system for receiving and stacking a plurality of print jobs (11,11a,11b) for a plurality of different recipients in plurality of mailbox bins. Each bin (11,11a,11b) may have a preset maximum sheet stacking capacity. A stapler system is provided for selectively stapling together the print jobs. A sheet distribution system (16) controlled by a control system (100) automatically directs and stacks into selected mailbox bins the respective print jobs of different recipients. A bin stacking level estimation system (50) provides an indication of the height of the stack in the mailbox bin, and includes a point count correction system having a counting subsystem for accumulating a point count of the number of sheets directed to a selected mailbox bin (11,11a,11b), a sheet thickness correction factor subsystem providing correction factors for differing sheet thicknesses, and a staple buildup factor input subsystem for providing correction factors to the point count for the number of stapled sets of job sheets being so directed. The point count correction system automatically corrects the point count with the sheet thicknesses and the staple buildup correction factors to more accurately estimate the stack height of the total stack of sheets to be stacked in the selected mailbox bin (11,11a,11b).

Abstract: An improved post-collation duplex to duplex copying system, for a duplexing copier with a duplex buffer tray (16), and connected sorter bins (Fig. 1(b), utilizing a recirculating duplex document handler (RDH) (20) in which a set of duplex (two sided) original document sheets (32)may be loaded, recirculated, copied, and inverted during circulations, for making plural duplex (two sided) copy sheets, by temporarily storing a calculated variable plural number of identical consecutive first side copies of each document in the duplex tray and feeding these copy sheets out from the duplex tray for copying their second sides in a subsequent document circulation, and outputting them to selected sorter bins, in which the plural identical copies are collated in a calculated variable number of sorter bins normally substantially less than the total number of bins. This variable number of identical copies made per document in a circulation and bins utilized per circulation is preferably a repeatedly recalculated function of the smallest of: (1) the duplex tray capacity DIVIDED number of originals being copied, or (2) the quantity of copy sets selected, or (3) the number of available sorter bins, or (4) the remaining quantity of copy sets to be made.

Abstract: An electrostatographic type copying or reproduction machine incorporating a programmable controller to operate the various machine components in an integrated manner to produce copies is disclosed. The controller carries a master program bearing machine operating parameters from which an operating program for the specific copy run desired is formed and used to operate the machine components to produce the copies programmed. A multiple prioritized interrupt system is employed to distribute the operating program to the machine. Self check routines check the operational integrity of the controller prior to start-up of the machine and periodically while the machine is processing copies.
